One of best place to visit if you are explorer . Beautiful and peaceful isolated beach. It’s very small island. Usually u have to go by private hire ferry

A trip to the little island of Pulau Hantu. Nested in amongst oil refineries, this tiny island is located to the south of the main island of Singapore. It is made up of Pulau Hantu Besar and Pulau Hantu Kechil, with a total area of 12.6 hectares
Our friends of 6 suggested a picnic once Singapore announced phase 3 due to Covid19 safe distancing and movement control. Pulau Hantu was not our first option though.
My husband and another friend used to have fishing trips around this island and suggested it. I started my search on how to get there and managed to chartered a boat own by a colleague's dad.
We departed the mainland Singapore from West Coast Pier near the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club at 8am after stopping by the market West Coast wet market to buy lived prawn as bait.
After about 30 minutes boat ride we arrived at the jetty of the big island.
The name of Pulau Hantu literally means "Ghost Island" in Malay. It may refer to the "disappearing" moment of the middle part of the island during the high tide. During the low tide, Pulau Hantu can be seen as one island with two large bays on its northern and southern sides.
The legend on it's name says that it was where ancient Malay warriors fought to their death and that their ghosts wander around the islan⁷d. But the island today is a peaceful part of our country lined with palm trees, white sandy beaches and swimming lagoons. It's just the perfect place for a peaceful picnic for us during the pandemic.
December has been a rainy month and after it rained for almost everyday just before our trip, we were blessed with a clear morning, blue skies and calm waters.
The water was surprisingly clean. We found no litter or trash underwater. We had an enjoyable picnic with great company and yummy food.

I heard so many bad reviews that I was not expecting much from this dive spot. I was impressed having thought the worse. The visibility was around 3-4 meters, greenish water, no current. A lot of small critters around, lots of nudibranchs, crabs, goby...it was a real muck dive. Paid 130$ for 2 dives, we were 3 divers with 1 dive master. Great afternoon in great company.

I've been back here twice more so far this year. Visibility remains about the same at 1-3 metres. But it's still a great way to get under the water without incurring the cost and pain of leaving Singapore. Definitely not world class diving, but it serves a purposes when you need it.

It has been quite a long time since I was last out diving in Singapore and so I decided to get back there again. And although the diving is mediocre by world standards, it's still a great way to spend a weekend morning. 2 dives and you're back before 1pm. I need to get another dive camera to get some decent shots of the various nudibranchs to be seen around Hantu.

Reminds me of a pacific island. Good day trip for a picnic. Visit during low tide so you walk between two islands. Great spot for snorkeling when visibility good

Was here over the weekend for over Nite camping with some light minded people. We joined a guy who organized hiking trip. Was well planned. He booked a bumboat from west coast pier, was a 30mins ride to the island. You will need identification card for Singaporeans or passport for tourist. Is a ideal place for day excursion. Nite camping must book in advance as it has monthly quota and must apply permit.
Overnite camping must bring own food, gas stove. No stall selling food. There is a toilet/shower - his/hers. No lights on the island except lights from the refinery. So bring torch light, headlight and candles and your own tents for sleeping. Do not chose monsoon month.
There is tremendous beauty in this place one shouldn't overlook. You have the whole beach to yourself and can see sea creature during low tide at the lagoon. I definite will come again.

This year I haven't been fortunate enough to be able to do much diving, and so I really needed to get into the water - Hantu was really the only practical option. But today the vis was particularly bad, just 1 metre. Not that much to see today but still good to be diving again.

Came back to Pulau Hantu this weekend for more dives aboard the Dolphin Explorer. It's a good way to spend a Saturday morning. Visibility wasn't too bad at 2-3 metres and there were even a few fish and nudibranchs to see. I'm yet to see the sea horses which many people claim are there.

As a follow-up to the review on Sister's Islands camping, note that the system for camping on Pulau Hantu is by a monthly quota which makes it very difficult to book just prior to the weekend. I tried for the 2nd weekend of a month and the quota had been used!
Lesson: book as early as possible and at least in the previous month. To book, send an email to:

Although in the past one could get a bum boat from a load of jettys, these have all gone now and I think that the closest is West Coast Ferry Terminal (there is a car park). You'll need passports and don't take too much as it is xrayed. Ring to book a boat/find out the cost.
Otherwise,camping is great so long as it is not over-packed - didn't used to be (used to have the island to ourselves but can't comment now (although they do limit numbers at any one time beside the quota).
Nice that there is a toilet block/shower - his/hers. No lights on the island.
Wild life: we've encountered dolphins, owl, island-hopping monitor lizards. Thankfully no monkeys on there.

nope. its basically a barren island with 2 jetties and coconut trees. no stalls whatsoever on it. there is a very old monkey on it too, only one left.

May I know how and where to take the transport to Pulau Hantu? Should I make booking in advance and what is the cost?

You can usually arrange these trips through local dive operators. Cost is around $100 SGD for 2 dives if you have your own gear. If you don't have your own gear then you'll need to arrange that with the dive shop.
Dolphin Explorer goes most weekends from the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club.
