Shopping and more
Nov 2021 • Couples
The famous shopping stretch in singapore. No more tourists, but still rather crowded. The better malls are Ion, Ngee Ann and Paragon. The other 20 malls are somewhat blah

Hard to Walk in the Heat
Jun 2021
The weather in Singapore is often hot and humid, so it's hard to stroll this major shopping area comfortably. But f you come here you will find lots of indoor shopping in comfort. Shopping!

Historical significance of this area
May 2021
Beside its attraction as a shopping heaven with its many malls and shops, it is also an architectural feast to walk down Orchard Road admiring the numerous interesting historical buildings.
This walk starts from The Cathay which was designed by Frank Brewer. It was originally 16-storey making it the tallest high-rise building in 1941. When landing at Kallang Airport, pilots even used this as a landmark to make their final approach. It also served as our first air-conditioned cinema. The Cathay's iconic Art Deco curved facade with the vertical "Cathay" logo was gazetted as a National Monument in 2003.

2 mins walk leads to another National Monument, the MacDonald House. It was built in 1949 and its architect was Reginald Eyre of Palmer and Turner. It was the first fully air-conditioned multi-storey office space and the main tenant was HSBC. The building was named after Sir Malcolm MacDonald, the British Commissioner-General for South-East Asia from 1948-1955. Its exterior features white marble and special sand-faced bricks from former local Alexandra Brickworks. A reminder of HSBC's occupancy is the large plaque on the building facade. embossed with the bank's former logo which comprises the United Kingdom's royal coat of arms above an image of three men and two Chinese junks. Two balconies flank the logo, each bearing the HSBC monogram. Another interesting feature is the old night safe just beside the main entrance. This building is most famous for the bombing attack in 1965. In 2015, a memorial to the victims of this attack was unveiled at Dhoby Ghaut Green opposite to MacDonald House.

At nearby Penang Road, Winsland House II consists of a pair of identical Edwardian-era semi-detached houses which were restored and it won the URA Architectural Heritage Awards in 2002. It sat on the former nutmeg estate first developed by Dr Thomas Oxley. The second storey verandah with pediment and decorative balustrades were restored.

Along the wide pedestrian walkway of rchard Mall, there are brass logo of different fruits on the floor signifying the history of this area and hence its name, Orchard Road.

Walk of a lifetime

Been there back in 2009, but the memories are still valid. I am looking forward to visit there once again with my family. Everything felt so surreal back then.

Good burgers
Oct 2020 • Solo
A burger is an occasional treat as it's never a meal unless you have all the accompanying sides. Shake Shack burgers are good and the sides are different.
