About
With a history dating back to its inception in 1887, the National Museum of Singapore is the nation's oldest museum with a progressive mind. Its galleries adopt cutting-edge and multi-perspective ways of presenting history and culture to redefine conventional museum experience. A cultural and architectural landmark in Singapore, the Museum hosts innovative festivals and events all year round-the dynamic Night Festival, visually arresting art installations, as well as amazing performances and film screenings-in addition to presenting thought-provoking exhibitions involving critically important collections of artefacts. The programming is supported by a wide range of facilities and services including F&B, retail and a Resource Centre. The National Museum of Singapore re-opened in December 2006 after a three-year redevelopment, and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012. The Museum refreshed its permanent galleries and re-opened them on 19 September 2015 for Singapore's Golden Jubilee.

- feetfirstRadlett, United Kingdom149 contributionsVery interesting collection housed in a beautiful building.I went primarily because as a first time visitor to Singapore, was interested in its history. This was fascinating. What I didn’t bargain for were the other 2 exhibits. Namely, ‘ The Story of The Forest’ & the Very Old Tree . The former an immersive experience of the flora & fauna of the Malay Peninsula. Extremely beautiful & the latter, an exhibition of photographs & the intimate stories given by ordinary people as to why a particular tree means something. Really emotionally powerful.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 October 2023
- Keith KAlton, United Kingdom239 contributionsGreat MuseumThe National Museum of Singapore is worth a visit, it is the oldest museum in Singapore and has been in it's current location on Stamford Road for 126 years. The entry fee is S$10 for an adult ticket (sept 2023) and the museum is open daily from 10am - 7pm. The museum showcases the history of Singapore and the exhibits are laid out in chronological order, there is a modern feature of a completely self supporting glass ceiling as part of the building.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 October 2023
- Hotelman08Mountain View, California73 contributionsA cool place to visit on a hot day. They had different price ticket that give you different access to the museum. I opted for the ticket that gave me full access. Unfortunately the day i went parts of the museum was closed. Even with part of the museum closed the was still a lot to see and do. I enjoyed the rotunda, it had a floral display that when you stood in the middle you felt full immersed. The train and the war exhibit were also well done. It is a great way to spend a few hours of your vacation.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 December 2023
- John S4 contributionsExcellent for history of SingaporeComprehensive, well balanced and excellently presented history of Singapore. Plenty of room left for nuance and contemplation. Personally surprised by small coverage given to WWII massacres of - largely - ethnic Chinese population.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023
- LJ21Sydney, Australia103 contributionsDefinitely visit !!Definitely get this on your list of places to visit in Singapore. It looks enormous and will take all day to have a good visit but we did main parts in 3 hours. It’s extremely good!! We loved it. The history of the building itself. The main space gave us a great understanding of the development of the country. The additional exhibition about travel was outstanding … didn’t expect to see this. The place is free entry but do give them a decent donation . Nice gift shop as well. One of our holiday highlights as it turned out. Ps tack into this visit a visit changi prison museum and chapelVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 December 2023
- Dan LBunbury, Australia8,543 contributionsLoved the History.Wonderful museum housed in a neoclassical building that opened in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and the more contemporary extension opened in 2006. Loved the collection of artefacts dating from early times through the early colinisation of Singapore, Japanese occupation, formation of the State and to the present day. Exhibits are marred somewhat by poor lighting, not sure if it's to protect the exhibits or create a type of mood, irrespective, it made it difficult to view some exhibits and read descriptions.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2023
- Natalia TSingapore, Singapore2,582 contributionsNice museum with exhibits about Singapore's historyWent to see the Teamlab mini exhibit at the National Museum of Singapore. It's quite nice, but nothing like the exhibits in Tokyo and Osaka. There are a lot of exhibits on the history of Singapore, and one could easily spend a few hours learning more about Singapore's history.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 January 2024
- Paul MakLondon, United Kingdom453 contributionsA Must!We had an excellent time! Due to having a limited amount of time, we thought it was best that we only went to the permanent galleries yet these were still very captivating and great as we were doing something different. Budget friendly and would definitely recommend. Staff could’ve been a little friendlier, but some were nice.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 January 2024
- Sam ANorthern Ireland, United Kingdom19 contributionsGreat for anyone interested in how Singapore was formed as a stateA fine old building housing some interesting exhibits. The focal point and best part for me is the display area on precolonial and colonial eras, covering the establishment of modern Singapore, through the British era, fall To Japan during WW2 and then the surrender of Japan. And the establishment of independent Singapore in the 1960s. The exhibited artifacts are not always the most dramatic things you may see anywhere in a museum, but the walk though journey is well Done with lots of audio-visual displays.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 January 2024
- RoverPInverness, United Kingdom773 contributionsWell worth a visit for a potted history of SingaporeWe spent about 90 minutes here but would have loved to have had more time. There is an excellent gallery taking one through the history of Singapore. The story of the highly successful transition from colonial times, through the brutal Japanese occupation to modern times is told well. How the people of Singapore have gone about the transition is a lesson for countries around the world. The display also tells the story earlier times and is no less fascinating.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2024

The cashier was very good in informing us about the different ticket types, - we chose to combo ticket which covered the whole museum. The exhibitions are very well presented, - also included huge wall to wall film - and very interesting about the history of Singapore and also the emphasis on women's education etc. Learned a lot from this visit!

I lucked out and entered just before the free 2 PM tour was to start. That tour hit the highlights of the museum in 1.5 hours (was supposed to be 1.0 hours). After that tour, I did the rest of the exhibits. I was expecting more, so was disappointed. I paid $19.

As an expat living in Singapore, I wanted to learn about the history and this museum is perfect for it. Affordable with lots to see, I highly recommend you do the tour that is included and done by the Friends of the Museum. You get a lot out of it because the volunteers are passionate about history and you learn more than by merely reading the museum plaques available.

Encountered the National Museum of Singapore while wandering around Fort Canning Park. It was always on our itinerary and because it was hot, it was a convenient refuge from the weather.
It is highly recommended that you allocate 3 hours here. We only managed to visit the permanent exhibit which chronicles the history of Singapore and that alone easily took 2 hours.
The contents of the museum itself I think captures the journey of Singapore from the Island of Temasek to British colony to the modern nation we are familar with. Through it all, I think the museum captures the national spirit very well. The only criticism I have is that the journey across Singapore’s history “stops” in the 1970s with the HDB exhibit. I thought it would be even more interesting if it got closer to the present time.

Excellent permanent exhibits of history and development of Singapore, very comprehensive, modern and easy to navigate.
They also have special exhibits worth seeing , like the nature walk inside the museum.
Easy to get to by metro.

The whole experience of the musium was fantastic, the exhibitions and amount of things to see are truely amaising. We must also recomend that any one who visits the Museum to take advantage of the internal restaurant there. The friendy and most atentive staff will make your visit a pleasurable one. I can personaly recomend the home made Lemon Iced tea with wine, a delisiously refreshing drink. My wife nicknamed it alchoholic Ribeena because of the colour after you stired the wine into the Icedtea. I would go back there again just for another one.

This is something not to be missed. I like the facade of the museum. It felt like I was in the early 1900s . When I got inside, I was also impressed with the ceiling.
I was so glad to get there in time for the guided tour and was able to join. It started at 11AM and ended at 12 noon.
The tour was about Singapore from the 1200s up to the present. The guide presented history in an entertaining fashion. He was funny and witty.
There were other exhibits. Another favorite of mine was the glass rotunda.
It will take about 2-3 hours to look around including the guided tour.
I highly recommend this to people who like to explore and LISTEN.

We visited this place few days ago.
When I compare the museums in other countries, this is a small museum with low number of exhibits, and that is understandable, considering the small size of the country.
Most of the exhibits focus on the last hundred years from World wars to the 2000s. However, there are few old exhibits as well.
Anyway, in my opinion they have done a good job with what they have.
My favorite part of the museum is the exhibits and descriptions about the recent development of Singapore, starting from 1950s. The commitment towards a well planned developed country is very inspirational. I strongly suggest this part of the Museum to visitors.

I visited the museum as William Farquhar is my great, great grandfather and I knew there were items relating to him. We were shown round by a senior curator who made the visit very interesting and I learned so much about my relative. It is a lovely airy museum which has bee recently extended very well.

Are there Japanese guide in this museum on weekdays? If there is, should I make a reservation in advance? Thank you for reading my question.

how much in Thai Baht does it cost for entry to both areas?
Written 19 August 2015
HI, it was 7 sing dollars per adult for the special exhibits and the general area is free but you must check if the museum general area is open. In April it was closed for renovations but you didn't know that till you got there. The free guided tour is fantastic I highly recommend it.
Written 20 August 2015
Yes. The entrance fee for a no resident is 18 SGD. you will get a ticket for all the rooms and exhibitions. One and a half hour will be enough to see the whole area. The restaurant there is pretty nice! Enjoy your time there.
