Chijmes with a silent J is a mouthful word to say unless you wanna spell and spread out the whole "Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School Singapore" that its short of.
And with that gothic architecture and spire it can only be an European designed Catholic Church. Except it's not. But it did used to be the nun run sister act girls school as well as orphanage where people would leave their unwanted infant girls for nuns to raise. Now this glittering, glamorous shopping and dining complex is serving the community in much more modest way by providing a wedding venue, high end shopping, dining experience and allows leaving only tips and good reviews behind.
It's still a national monument and heritage landmark though and very distinctive among all other modern buildings.

Chijmes is a very special place. It is a former convent converted into a food district. Fortunately, the original structure of the building has been maintained, even if nothing religious has been preserved, not even the all-white church in the centre, which has now become a place where you can organize sit-down lunches and dinners with a catering service. The restaurants located inside the courtyard of the convent are not at all attractive, they are clear and expensive tourist traps.

Chimes is another hidden treasure in SG as from outside you won't imagine there were some dining options available behind the old hostel and church. We had relaxing and wonderful afternoon tea with my cousin who took me to the place. I am not sure what time it opens or close but a must visit place for someone who likes historic architectures..

In the heart of the colonial district is an old convent and school. However rather than tearing down, Singapore has an incredible reuse. The beautiful sanctuary, exterior and interior, is used as a wedding chapel today. However, it is the matching architechtual school that has been converted to a restaurant and entertainment district. We ate at New Ubin and enjoyed an incredible dinner with the owner/chef. However just walking the grounds at day and night was simply amazing. It is great for pictures.

We recently stayed for a few days in Singapore and had breakfast in Chijmes each day. The cafe opens at 8.00am unlike most others around that open at 10.00. It is not cheap but cheaper than eating at a hotel and comparable to Perth prices. They have a reasonable menu. The other restaurants and bars in the complex are terrific. There are two Indian restaurants, several bars at ground level and a few modern cuisine restaurants. The only let down is that there are not many toilets and finding them can be fun. Don’t wait to go until you are busting.

Grand complex of buildings now serving as restaurants and a function Centre. It dates to 1854 with the purchase of Caldwell House. The Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus chapel was completed in 1903 and consecrated the following year. Saint Nicholas Girls' School was established in 1933 in four old houses+ which were replaced by a three storey building in 1951. The complex ceased to function in 1983 and the chapel deconsecrated. Today's facilities are the result of extensive restorations undertaken between 1991 - 1996 when the complex became a location for bars, restaurants and function centre. When we visited a wedding was underway in the former chapel.

Visited one evening during our three day stay in Singapore. Really interesting use of an old church and surrounding grounds. Lots of cool restaurants and bars with entertainment. Loved the courtyard area that was decorated with thousands of lights in the trees, and with LED lit up signs for that Instagram shot. We didn’t eat here but loved just sitting and people watching. No cost to do that. And right across the street from our hotel.

This place used to be the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus and is well known around the world where the wedding scene from Crazy Rich Asians took place in Chijmes Hall. The hall wasn’t actually open when I was there, but I don’t think it’s normally open to the public anyway. The area is no longer a church, having been turned into a food and beverage place, although the former church has been restored. It’s a pretty looking Neo-Gothic church and the area still retains the Gothic architecture of the former grounds of the church, especially the cloisters. Unless you’re a fan of the film or intend to eat there, I wouldn’t go out of the way to see this.

CHIJMES, a historic building complex which was known as Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School.
In Day Time, it shows peaceful oasis amid the bustle of the city. At night time, options with bars offer live music and restaurants offer delicacies food.

How about the food and service charges?is it expensive?
Written 7 December 2020
Chijmes doesnt have one simple answer to your question. It is a site that houses a collection of restaurants and each has their own pricing.
Those that have websites will publish them there - the ANgloIndian cafe and bar does for example and would be toward the lower end - rising to more expensive locations. Since some include expensive imported goods - such as the Carnivore Churrascaria - prices can go fairly high
These are not cheap food court prices , but city centre sites. So these start at mid range restaurants and go up to include some fairly pricey ones.
Chijmes' own website has a directory with links to websites for those restaurants that maintain them...so look them up is the best option. Find the prices for a place that interests, or search through for one that matches your budget.

Is there any opening hours to visit? I would like to see the buildings in the heritage trail.
