We walked here from Alexandra Canal Linear Park taking the fields behind the Queenstown Library and then Ridout Road. There are wonderful good size bungalows to admire along the route such as No 23, 31 and 35 Ridout Road as well as No 2 Pierce Drive and No 2 Pierce Road. Opposite No 2 Pierce Road is a cemented path leading to Dempsey Hill.
There are many restaurants here with a wide choice of different kinds of food. We were glad to visit PS cafe with its delicious food and lovely cosy ambience when seated outdoor. St George church in the nearby Tanglin Village is worth a look too.

Love this area! Just gives you a break from modern Singapore.

Throw back to our colonial-era. St George’s Church is still there - a red bricked, non-AC church, think it was built in the 1930s? - a rare find in Singapore. However, the old interfaith servicemen’s chapel, that is now White Rabbit restaurant. They’ve kept and restored the mosaic tiled floor, stained-glass windows and wrought-iron ceiling beams. Great night ambience, food and drinks.

Also, Junior Flying Club, where as a boy, I was into aero modeling and spent many a Saturday morning - that’s now Au Petit Salut, another wonderful restaurant. Most of these eateries offer al fresco dining with a view of lush greenery, like PS Cafe or The Wine Connection too.

Be adventurous. You just have to hunt for them, sprawled across a 5 to 6 SqKm, so be prepared to walk and expect to be hot and sweaty if you’re not driving. Unless you tuck into AC and have a snack / drink between your walkabout here. More like a coffee/ snack-shop about :)

Extend your exploration of the area into Tanglin Hill and you’ll see some lovely huge bungalows on sprawling land. Most are private property so don’t wander in, even if their gates are open!

Restaurants, many great ones, cafes, high-end grocers, an ice cream shop, kids activity corners, art galleries, kindergartens and the weekend farmers market that pop up. You’d probably find designer soda water and caviar here easily. Try Hubert’s Butchery - great grocery section! Even the fields and pitches are still used and a hive of activity most weekends or evenings, used by soccer, rugby and maybe even cricket clubs. I’ve seen them!

Classic and sports car clubs love to gather in the weekend mornings here for their owners to show off their pride and joy. Just come by and see. Want to see 25 Lamborghinis in all colours? You might... or maybe 25 Minis or the HOGs. Harley Davidson Owners club of Singapore.

Parking is free and just a walk from Botanic Gardens if you’re in the neighborhood. This place is literally a 10 minute drive from Orchard Rd!

I remember this well as Tanglin Barracks, CMPB. When army trucks and land-rovers were a common sight here. What is Como restaurant today was the large assembly hall where we boys took our oath to serve and defend Singapore for our national service enlistment. That was March 1987 for me! Yes, you said your National pledge, then have your heads shaven and finally kitted up with your “Alibaba” duffel bags and off you’re sent to your assigned unit on then 3-tonne Bedford trucks!! Yes Encik!! (‘Endearing’ term for Company Sergeant Majors)

Today, this is a very upmarket chic & glamorous enclave. It’s still relaxing, with old haunts like Muthu’s Curry and the furniture shops. Yup they’re still there! What’s gone is the old six-hole golf course. That’s becoming the new MRT station in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office - now that building, that was Army HQ for me and MinDef. The public has no access there today, unless you’re on diplomatic business.

Hope the powers-that-be keep this place the same as long as possible. In fast developing and land-hungry Singapore, it’s just a matter of when... so enjoy it while it lasts.

If you like it here at Dempsey, try Gillman Barracks too. It’s off Alexandra Rd and the Labrador area. Not as commercial, more galleries and design offices, equally relaxing.

Dempsey Hill might be slightly far out and hard to reach without a car but the variety of restaurants that await you is worth the Trip.

From Spanish to Chinese Food, this place have it all. Great for dates by the way.

If your in singapore do make this a stop.

Be warned though, the prices here can be steep, so keep Budget in mind.

Besides food there are also furniture shops here

Dempsey Hill has blossomed over the last 11 years. We always loved the atmosphere with its many trees and historical value. It is now more vibrant with lights, art gallery, restaurants, shops, and a lot more people. We love eating at Blu Kouzina and then going to Little House of Cakes for their red velvet.

I gave the place 4 stars because there is no walking path and the cars drive quickly.

Just off Holland Road, past the Singapore Botanical Gardens you will find Dempsey Hill, also known as Tanglin Village. It is a hip gathering of many informal chic restaurants, bars, furniture shops, galleries, and a delicatessen. Set in former army barracks in a lush green scenery as if the interior of a country, it is unique for Singapore like you are in another place. Public is well off but informal at the same time. The atmosphere reminds me of Leblon in Rio de Janeiro, although the surroundings are completely different. Clearly a place to see and be seen. As there are so many good restaurants and bars to choose from it is an ideal place to just go to and then make your pick. Also ideal for Saturdays and Sundays strolling plus brunch / lunch / drinks / dinner.

This place is much, much nicer than the more derelict and somewhat chaotic Holland Village.

We liked everything about this place from the first time we tried it to our final night in Singapore. The food is delicious,
Margaritas are lethal and there is live music Fridays and Saturdays and if you have consumed enough Margaritas then you can dance. The owners Ushu and Patrick are a great couple and will do everything they can to make sure that you will have a great night

Lovely place to visit good restaurants or cafes around. But it was a shame that they are doing the road work. DAYLIGHT ROAD WORK! That’s ridiculous! The whole area is so dusty and made you think twice to have a lunch there because of the smell and dust. They should have done this work in the midnight.

We went here on a rainy evening and can’t say we felt it was worth the cab ride. Yes, it’s set in an old army barracks area converted into restaurants but it has ended up as an enclave of expensive tourist focused restaurants that have very little to do with the feel of Singapore - they could be anywhere.

We went to one restaurant and there was a 40min wait. Went to another and was told 15mis, but we were then actually seated nearly straight away. It was a Mexican place and was ok, nothing special.

My friend and I decided to try the afternoon tea buffet at House @ Dempsey Hill after reading positive reviews online. The setup of the buffet table is inviting and displays the savoury and sweet pastries well. The ambiance of this place makes it a relaxing and charming environment for chit chatting with friends over small delicate pastries with a cup of tea. Friendly and great service from the staff and I really enjoyed the savoury pastries. They even had special of the day where staff serves it directly to each customer. However I do find the sweet pastries and cakes a bit too sweet for my liking. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to the new changes which will be rolled out soon.
