My husband and I took our daughter (1year) here for brunch on the Sunday we arrived. There is every sort of restaurant you could want (at least 10 options, I'd say), furniture shops that were very pleasant to walk through, and the location can't be beat. We walked around with a stroller and it was easy. The area is hilly and feels like a spacious forest. It's also close to the Botanic Gardens so I'd recommend coming here for some food before or after your visit there.

This area was part of a huge nutmeg plantation owned by Colonial Treasurer William W. Willans and local business owner “Whampoa” Hoo Ah Kay. In 1857, the nutmeg blight caused the plantation to become commercially unviable. The land was sold to the British Government. In 1861 they built theTanglin Barracks to house soldiers from the Far East British Forces and their families.

During World War II and the Japanese Occupation, Tanglin Barracks was the gathering point for British and Australian POWs as well as a store for ammunition and medical supplies.

After the war in 1945, Tanglin Barracks became the General Headquarters of the Far East Land Forces.

The British forces departed in 1971 and this became the Tanglin camp for the Ministry of Defence and the former Central Manpower Base, where young men reported for conscription, was located at Block 17. This square between blocks 15, 17 and 18 was where anxious parents gathered to see their sons off on 3-tonne trucks.

Many of the buildings in the Loewen cluster were once part of Tanglin Military
Hospital until 1940 when the bigger Alexandra Hospital was built to accommodate more troops in the years before World War II.

In 2007, the colonial buildings were beautifully restored into an enclave for retail, dining and lifestyle known as Dempsey Hill.
St. George’s Church was first established as a garrison church for Tanglin Barracks. The current building was erected between 1910 and 1911. Since 1971, St. George’s has been a civilian church under the Anglican Diocese of Singapore.

In 2015 Loewen Cluster was redeveloped into an education, lifestyle, retail, and services destination.

Nice restaurants and cafes ... really good places which are quite costly ... but good.

Everywhere you look around you see these restaurants dump trash in the woods.

I thought Singapore is so super strict regarding littering.

The places to shop a not worth to visit. Overpriced tourist stuff.

Dempsey Hill is an old British Army barracks. It was quite derelict for a number of years but now it has some fantastic restaraunts. Most have managed to keep the original building features. Go and enjoy a magical night with twinkling lights amongst the lush jungle greenery. Just ask the taxi to take you to Dempsey Hill.

A colonial feel that attracted us back to the place. Lots of cafes and restaurants options; and a great place to hang out without the hustle of finding parking. Centrally located which is fantastic for common meeting points & in the proximity of Orchard.

Nice place with lots of greenery on top of a hill ! One has a nice ride through a forest area and the botanic gardens . Place was an army barracks (buildings ) years ago . Has a touch and feel of the old but many restaurants are housed there - Could not have known this place but for a local friend.Away from the busy city !!

I find this spot great for a Sunday. We went there for the first time on Sunday to have a look around. There are a few boutique shops, Balinese furniture shop and a couple of restaurants and cafe's/coffee shops.

We ended up grabbing some nice cold meat from the butcher (it's expensive) but tasty. We also had some coffee at PS cafe and sat outside in he garden. We enjoyed it as it was so relaxing.
