Neighbourhood: Marina Bay
More of a mini city than a neighbourhood in the traditional sense, the iconic Marina Bay aims to dazzle and entertain visitors of all kinds. This is the Singapore found in glossy brochures, featuring a world-class hotel, casino, shops, restaurants, bars, and other attractions all geared towards pure entertainment. The SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands provides a stunning view of the city, a must-see photo opportunity for visitors and locals alike. The ArtScience Museum always has a top-quality exhibition, and Gardens by the Bay is a fascinating manifestation of the government’s vision of Singapore as a “city in a garden”. Enticing Marina Bay is well worth a visit.

Home of the iconic Singaporean statue
My husband and I took a tour of the central business district in Singapore. At the end of the tour, we ended up in Merlion Park with the iconic statue of the Merlion, a mythical half-lion, half fish. The Merlion’s fish-half symbolizes Singapore’s origins as a fishing village, known as Temasek. The head of the statue represents the city’s original name of Singapura. The statue currently stands at 8.6 meters tall in front of the Fullerton Hotel and overlooks Marina Bay, it’s home since 2002. As tourists, we naturally had to take photos in front of the Merlion statue. It’s a lot bigger than you’d think. There is a mini one in the park that you can also take photos of. The park is free to everyone and it is a busy hubbub of activity during the late afternoon and evening. We took a bus to and from the business district that day and found the park easily accessible.

    The Icon of Singapore
While you are in the city, this is an excellent location for taking photographs because you will be able to see a variety of buildings all around you and take in the diverse architecture as well as views of the bay. Can be a popular destination for tourists. Before moving on to the next location, take some time to relax, take in the scenery, and have a refreshing beverage or a delicious ice cream treat.

    A temporarily closed Merlion experience
They are renovating the statue itself as they will reopen next year? It was fun to walk around the area even though the highlight of the whole Singapore trip is to see the Merlion. For the meantime, there's a small version of Merlion you can enjoy and take a photo with.

    Symbol
In addition to being one of the most recognizable monuments in Singapore, the Merlion also serves as the Lion City's unofficial mascot. Its body is that of a fish, but it has the head and mane of a lion. The fish body is meant to symbolize Singapore's beginnings as a fishing community when it was known by its previous name, Temasek. The area around the fish is incredibly attractive and provides a wonderful opportunity to take some stunning photographs.

An unusual fountain worth to see!!
It is worth a visit here if you have the time to come by early in the morning before 9a.m. or so as it gets quite busy and crowded. We started from the Anderson Bridge under the Esplanade and walked past the smaller Merlion statue before arriving to the big Merlion that has a fountain that sprays water into the Marina Bay. A very unusual sight for sure and make sure you walk around both sides of the fountain to see the different views. There are a lot of souvenir shops and drink stands around the Esplanade, also a restroom behind the souvenir shops.

    Captivating Merlion Park Experience
During my first visit to Singapore, exploring Merlion Park proved to be a highlight of my trip. The park, nestled between the stunning Marina Bay and the iconic Sands hotel, offers a unique blend of history and picturesque views. The Merlion statue itself is a fascinating sight, with its fish body symbolizing Singapore's fishing community roots and a lion's head representing the city's original name, Singapura. The park is more than just a photo opportunity; it's a vibrant hub with plenty of shops, restaurants, and a lively atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed strolling along the water, taking in the diverse architecture and scenic views across the bay. Merlion Park is a must-visit for anyone exploring Singapore, providing not only a glimpse into the city's heritage but also a fantastic spot to unwind and appreciate the surrounding beauty.

    The Merlion, iconic Singapore symbol.
We had to enjoy views of this historic monument from our river boat, the park surrounding closed for redevelopment and reopening not scheduled until after we departed Singapore. One benefit, I could get a photo without the usual hordes surrounding the Merlion. The Merlion is a Singapore icon, sculpted by Lim Nang Seng in 1972, and underwent maintenance works in 2023.

    Must visit while in Singapore
The area like a water front with lots of shops and cafes around. The highlight of the place is of course the Merlion fountain! These days its quite hot and humid in Singapore and so it is difficult to spend a lot of time there. If possible, do visit the place again after sundown to enjoy the beautiful lightings!

Pretty waterside location - great views of the city skyline and Marina Bay
The Merlion is the mascot of Singapore - a creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Merlion Park is a beautiful location by Marina Bay that offers plenty of photo opportunities and views over the business district, the Marina Bay Sands hotel, the ArtScience Museum and Singapore Flyer big wheel. The Jubilee Bridge is worth exploring to get a different view looking back. You can't avoid all the vloggers and Instagrammers as it's a popular selfie location but there's plenty of room to find a quiet space to sit and chill and take in the sights. There are toilets close to the Starbucks near the Anderson bridge. There is some outdoor seating. It's a top attraction and well worth checking out if spending time in the city.

Iconic Singapore Symbol that doesn’t disappoint
An iconic symbol of Singapore which is worth the journey for the views over the city and Marina. Best to go in the evening when the lighting gives added effect. The area around the park has multiple eateries and up market hotels, particularly the Fullerton. The closest MRT stop is Raffles MRT.

There are a couple things that people will tell you must be seen/done if you visit Singapore, and that you haven’t really been there if you miss it. Merlion Park is one of those things.

The statue itself is quite beautiful and impressive, and locals will tell you that it brings good fortune to Singapore (at least that’s what they told us!). You will need to be patient and well-positioned if you want to get good pictures, so take your time, and enjoy the people watching! You will see countless people lining up shots to catch the Merlion’s water in their mouth, hands, coffee cup...the pinnacle of tourist photos akin to holding up the leaning tower of Pisa.

There are a lot of nice views of the skyline in the area, and plenty of places to grab a quick bite or coffee nearby. As with essentially anywhere you go in Singapore, Merlion Park is very well maintained, safe and extremely clean.

Love it there especially at night because the surroundings offered wonderful views not only to the Merlion statue but also Marina Bay Sands and Fullerton hotel. I was there few times during day or night but still preferred night time as it is too hot during day time. The Merlion statue no doubt offered spectacular view and it is the logo of Singapore. It is worth the time visiting it.

The Merlion Park is one of Singapore most popular locations day or night. As Singapore iconic statue there, it is crowded with people taking selfies. There are a lot of cafes and bars along the promenade. It is buzzing with activities and very lively. great atmosphere. There are several landmarks like the Esplanade, Singapore Flyer, ArtScience museum, Sands Hotel, Helix Bridge, Sky Park a short distance away.

It is a good place to relax and enjoy Marina Bay.

An early morning visit before 9.00am is recommended to avoid selfie seekers.

The Merlion, and surrounding Merlion Park, are truly gems in the crown of Singapore. There are two Merlion's, one is 8m tall and is a water fountain [visible from across the bay] and another one just tucked away behind it.
Of course you're going to take a million and one photos for FB/Twitter/Insta/SnapChat... I'd really recommend getting there early when the crowd is less dense, so you can get better snaps!

Logistically, how to get to the Merlion: Hop on to the Singapore Metro, go to Raffles Place Station. Exit the station from exit C. When you leave, do not go towards the exit opposite you. As you leave, turn left and follow the road around the corner to the HSBC office/branch. Cross the main road and go down the steps to Merlion Park

Located on the waterfront it’s an enjoyable park to walk around the harbour, Merlion statue/water feature is a popular attraction and great photo opportunity.

It’s a buzz of activity with restaurant, bars etc and with people jogging around waterfront.

I would highly recommend going at night time as the lights of the marina bay sands and the surround skyscrapers is very impressive.

One of the great tourist spots, instantly associated with Singapore. The statue in itself looks a lot smaller than you would anticipate, but it's one of those don't miss it places even though it can be underwhelming once you get there.
Steer clear of the gift shop or some of the restaurants close to this unless you're looking to spend a lot

You can't visit Singapore without a visit to the Merlion. It is quite an agnostic symbol for Singapore as it is largely unrelated to any one religion, race, or folklore. Nor was it gifted by any early ally of the city state. Still, since its designer created it in 1964, the old fountain has turned into sort of a national treasure. Visit it in the evening after dinner at One Fullerton along the bay I say, then talk a walk along the bridge toward the Esplanade. The Singapore Tourism Board commissioned the Merlion in the 1970s and it is just a very Uniquely Singaporean Marina Bay attraction that is always worth the trip for a snapshot at best.

This is one of the must-see places in Singapore and definitely some camera moments here. However, there were too many tourists in a small spot wanting to take pictures and it got a bit annoying. You can do the River Cruise here for 25 Dollars for 50 minutes - best to choose the one around 8pm so you don't miss the laser show at night. There are also restaurants which were quite expensive though. On the opposite side of the bay is Marina Bay Sands
