Duck & Hippo is one really good way of seeing Singapore when you are there for just about 4 or 5 days in all.
We got ourselves the 2 day Singapore Pass that comes for SG$69 per ticket. We got our ticket at the Duck N Hippo counter at Suntec Galleria. The pass is valid for 48 hours so if you purchase your tour pass at 5pm today, its valid till 5pm two days later.
The primary tours offered are:
1. City Sightseeing - City route that operates east to west, connecting the hotels, major shopping malls along Orchard
2. City Sightseeing - Heritage route that operates north to south and connects major heritage precincts such as Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown
3. The Original Tour - combines some parts of both the above tours and departs from the Singapore Flyer
4. The Duck Tour - on the Kallang River
The Hippo buses are double deckers with an air-conditioned lower deck for those who don't want to be exposed to the humidity of Singapore, while the upper deck is partially covered with an awning, the rest of it being open. The buses run on time, are clean, well maintained and manned by professional crew.
Tip 1: These buses offer commentary over a PA system (no earphones), but at times the commentary is not in sync with the landmark being described. Its best therefore to keep tracking your progress on the tour by referring to the tour map that comes with the ticket.
Tip 2: The other downside of not having earphones, is that if you are travelling on the top deck, the commentary becomes unclear / inaudible in areas where ambient noise is high. (If you can take the sun, I still would recommend the top deck though!)
Tours 1, 2 and 3 crisscross Singapore and yes, there is some duplication because of this. However that is only a minor irritant, and perhaps gives you a second chance to take some photographs that you may have missed out on the first pass!
The Duck Tour is on an amphibious vehicle that travels a short distance from Suntec to the Kallang River which is the splashdown point where it converts to a boat. In just about an hour, you are treated to wondrous views of the most prominent landmarks of Singapore including the Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay, Marina Barrage, Gardens by the Bay, The 'Durian', Floating Stadium, the Helix bridge, Supreme Court, Merlion, Singapore CBD, Marina Bay Sands and so forth - needless to add this tour is a camera buff's delight.
The value add-ons that increase the worth of the 2 day Singapore Pass ticket are complimentary entry / tickets for:
- Singapore Flyer - as is now all too well known, this is a new major attraction
- HiPPO River Cruise - real good fun drifting down the Singapore River taking in various major landmarks of the Lion City
- Bumble Bee Water Taxi - great for doing the Clarke Quay area in particular
- Chinatown Heritage Centre / Asian Civilization Museum / Singapore Art Museum
- Botanic/Orchid Gardens
- Little India Walking Tour / Chinatown Walking Tour
Tip 3: While the ticket does cover all the above, fact is that 48 hours just does not allow you to do full justice to the bouquet of attractions offered - we missed out on the Asian Civilization Museum and Singapore Art Museum, as also both the walking tours since their start times clashed with other things we were doing. Therefore its best to prioritize in advance your list of "must-sees / must-dos" before starting off on the tours.
All said and done, I think Duck n Hippo is a great way of doing Singapore - over land and water!
