A good place for a look and lunch

Walked through the city to have lunch here. A few good seafood and souvenir stalls to look at and a lovely fish lunch. Touting is fairly overwhelming though.

As noted by other contributors, Mercado Central has a thievery ring operating around it. They throw a form of dirty oily water on you which lands like bird s%#t, leaving you wonder 'what just dropped on me'. A helpful person walks by saying 'oh, how horrible' and begins to help you clean off by offering water and tissue they pull... More

Definitely worth checking out. As we were new to Chile it was great to see all the stalls, produce and various sauces. I ended up getting a handful of mystery sauces - some for dipping and some for cooking which was great. Outside is a bee hive of traffic and people and it's a great place to people watch.

Though a fish market is always interesting, I went there specifically to have a Sunday lunch. Tourists are around, but the place was full of local people, happily eating and also enjoying live music at several places. I find it an authentic place where local eat and not a touristy make up. My fish soup was so substantial that I... More

A visit to the majestic mercado central snd the fish market is an absolute must, during a visit to Santiago. For a less scenic but cheaper lunch, try the restaurants outside the main square! All fish and seafood is fresh and delicious!

This is a great seafood market for pictures if nothing else. The choice of seafood is huge and some of the fish were so fresh they were still jumping. However, don't go to the restaurants around the market. They are touristy, mediocre and overpriced.

The food is average. I wouldn't eat there, just walk over 10 mins away to Bellavista to find better food

The central market has an interesting architecture. It is compact comparing to other central markets in the world but you can see fresh seafood and it has many restaurants. The downside is that when you walk around to have a look, the "meseros" are a little bit too pushy trying to get you inside tin the restaurants.

This is a great place to enjoy the Chilean cousin. Very traditional for the locals. With different restaurants.
