Center of the town

This is the center of the town and the beginning of where you go uphill to explore Valparaiso. A good landmark and meeting point.

The monument is located on the south side near the port area. You will see it if you do the tours 4 tips walking tour ( well worth it). I would not go out of your way to see it.

We ended our 'Free Walking Tour' (very informative - if you have the time, take the tour!) at the Plaza just in time for the flag lowering ceremony at 6 PM. There is a small museum under the statue, I'm told, but it wasn't open when we were there. There are a few shops in the plaza AND of course,... More

Although it was busy and jammed with tourists and also traffic just outside the square when we arrived, the plaza is a "must to see" for visitors of Valparaiso. The patriotic site is surrounded by heritage buildings, full of architectural individuality and maritime history. The monument in the plaza is dedicated to the seamen who lost their lives in the... After walking around on a walking tour, we came to the Plaza. I expected a real plaza, not a large intersection with a lot of cars. Not walking friendly at all.

Please don't get the wrong idea, but I'm writing this experience I had to make all tourists aware that at this moment Valparaíso is not the safest place for tourists. My sister and I had just left the parking garage from this plaza to head for Viña del Mar and at a stop light, the man in the car behind... More

If you are in the City you will likely spend some time in this plaza and the surrounding area. It is named after Rafael Sotomayor and is lined by buildings occupying full block-fronts of the streets that flank it. The focus of the square is the monument that honors Chilean sailors that died in two battles. Great architectural merit in... More

Plaza Sotomayor is an interesting plaza with some beautiful buildings surrounding it. There is a large sculpture at the side you would walk by on your way to the waterfront.

The maritime heart of the city, this square pays tribute to Valparaiso's naval past in the naval Command Building and the impressive Monument to the Heroes of Iquique honoring Chile's naval stars. A hub of activity, it's next to the Muelle Prat Pier that offers a wonderful view of the working harbor as well as a handicrafts market popular for... More
