The ascensor itself is a non-event if you have taken others in town. The point is to get to the top of the hill, which has great views over the harbor. I took it both directions so not sure how long the walk is up...More

We visited Valparaíso on NYE and NYD so the elevators were all closed. We only had time to do this one when they reopened on 2 January. Just missed one going up but only had to wait 5 mins for the next one at about...More

Good view from this Ascensor, one of the better ones, and one of the longer ones too. And at the top there are good open views. 300 CH Pesos one way. We chose to walk back down and search out more street art.

Very close to the harbour you will have stunning views over the bay of Valparaiso. At the top there is a walkway "Paseo 21 de Mayo" from which you can take the best pictures of Valparaiso. Don't miss the blue mansion at the top!

This is one of the many trams carrying passengers up and down the hill in this hillside city. Very practical to save you a big climb.

The Artilleria funicular, opened in 1893, is one of only 7 working funiculars. Valparaiso had as many as 30 at one time, today 16 remain. All are National Monuments and there is an ongoing effort to restore those that are not operational. Our guide Fernando...More

Not well maintained cablecars lead you to a hill from which the entire city of Valparaiso is spread in front of your eyes. Rides are 300 pesos each way.

It was built in 1893 to transport the staff of the old naval school. Its upper station lies in the 21 de Mayo Promenade. Our tour offered the opportunity to take the funicular down rather than walk back uphill to the bus. Cost is 300...More

Mi relato en ingles: Unfortunally, my experience in Valparaiso was very bad. My brother is living in Santiago de Chile and we decided to go to Valparaiso by ourselves. We took the Ascensor Artillería at 10:30 a.m. From there we went to the Naval and maritime museum. Our mistake was decided to go by walk to the others turistic places. so we started to walk and then after 15-20 minutes we were robbed violently. 2 men started to run in our direction, the biggest who was also the leader tried to take my bag and snatch my bag. I was stronger than him. So He threw me on the floor, I was immobilized with a foot and he pulled out a switchblade knife. I saw the knife close to my belly and I was ready to receive the knife. I closed my eyes and I got peed on. My brother was with the other guy who was short and thin and asked for the money/la Plata to a meter away. My brother gave the wallet with 200.000 chilean pesos and all documents and credit card. He was able to hide the I-phone 6 (the price is around 800 Eur). he didn´t tried to help me. My brother told me to stop to tighten the purse/the bag. I did it and the man took my bag which contain the samsung S3, sony zt3 waterproof, a small canon camera (value around 60 Eur) and 110.000 chilean pesos. We were on a Cerro/Hill very close to a square with a checkpoint police (carabinieros). we made the complaint of theft which took a lot of time. The police was very very lazy. Then we went to the police office by car to finish to declair. We lost all the money and we asked to the police some money to return to santiago. They gave the money and we made the transfer the following day. The police told us that Valpairaiso is getting the most dangerous city of Chile. The tourists has to go there with a Tour or if they walk alone, the have to go only in the most touristic places. Sometimes the Lanzas/thieves start to follow the tourist and await the opportunity to rob. It a pity that this beautiful city is so unsafe. The police told us that some people who comes to Valparaiso to give the recognition as a UNESCO heritage of humanity were also robbed. Be careful.

Que terrible! Lo siento. Si, hay ladrones en el puerto, y en enero y febrero hay muchos profesionales. ¿La ciudad más peligrosa en el país? No, pero, una con un flujo de turistas.
