This hillside tram is over 100 years old and is now a national monument. Tourists can still ride the lift today and take in breathtaking panoramic views of downtown and the ocean.

Personally I'd prefer walking up the hill but it is an funny experience. Doesn't feel like the safest thing in the world but an experience nonetheless. Great views on the way through

Valparaisio (or at least the bits we saw) is really a dormitory/port town with not a lot going on for a tourist. One of the highlights is to ride the funicular or ascensor. I understand there are around 40 in town, in various stages of...More

One of many funiculars leading to one of the hillside communities, Ascensor Artilleria affords beautiful views and leads to a fascinating neighborhood, including the interesting and impressive historic naval military museum.

Long lines! Be prepared and leave enough time. It lets off on the hill into a nice tourist market with a good view and pleasant walk. Naval museum entrance is partway through this market.

You can have a fun ride up the hill, and from the summit... just enjoy a great view over the different tasks performed in Chile's busiest port.

It's a treat to ride one if the many ascensores in Valparaiso including this one. You can reach el 21 de mayo and get a great view of the pier and watch the cranes loading the sea containers onto the tractor trailers.

Another of the nice Ascensors, on the Northern edge of town. Not much at the top apart from nice views of the port, the Maritime Museum and a few nice local restaurants and cafes

Mi relato en ingles: Unfortunally, my experience in Valparaiso was very bad. My brother is living in Santiago de Chile and we decided to go to Valparaiso by ourselves. We took the Ascensor Artillería at 10:30 a.m. From there we went to the Naval and maritime museum. Our mistake was decided to go by walk to the others turistic places. so we started to walk and then after 15-20 minutes we were robbed violently. 2 men started to run in our direction, the biggest who was also the leader tried to take my bag and snatch my bag. I was stronger than him. So He threw me on the floor, I was immobilized with a foot and he pulled out a switchblade knife. I saw the knife close to my belly and I was ready to receive the knife. I closed my eyes and I got peed on. My brother was with the other guy who was short and thin and asked for the money/la Plata to a meter away. My brother gave the wallet with 200.000 chilean pesos and all documents and credit card. He was able to hide the I-phone 6 (the price is around 800 Eur). he didn´t tried to help me. My brother told me to stop to tighten the purse/the bag. I did it and the man took my bag which contain the samsung S3, sony zt3 waterproof, a small canon camera (value around 60 Eur) and 110.000 chilean pesos. We were on a Cerro/Hill very close to a square with a checkpoint police (carabinieros). we made the complaint of theft which took a lot of time. The police was very very lazy. Then we went to the police office by car to finish to declair. We lost all the money and we asked to the police some money to return to santiago. They gave the money and we made the transfer the following day. The police told us that Valpairaiso is getting the most dangerous city of Chile. The tourists has to go there with a Tour or if they walk alone, the have to go only in the most touristic places. Sometimes the Lanzas/thieves start to follow the tourist and await the opportunity to rob. It a pity that this beautiful city is so unsafe. The police told us that some people who comes to Valparaiso to give the recognition as a UNESCO heritage of humanity were also robbed. Be careful.

Que terrible! Lo siento. Si, hay ladrones en el puerto, y en enero y febrero hay muchos profesionales. ¿La ciudad más peligrosa en el país? No, pero, una con un flujo de turistas.
