as you tour old town this is worth stopping, people viewing and moving on. You don't need lots of time here but it is worth seeing.

Must see when visiting Quito, the Capitol of Ecuador. Large plaza with surrounding government buildings typical of the New World and reflective off it's Spanish Conquers Heritage. Just be careful there are constant burage of vendors and don't expect free bathrooms if in need.

The Plaza is full of energy, with lots of locals and tourists. Lots of people- watching. Visit but don't linger. Hard to believe the Presidential Palace is right on the Plaza. We were traveling with locals who indicated the Plaza venue is popular for government...More

Beutiful plaza in the center of centro historico. Very much going on and a nice place to sit and look at people or walk around just enjoying the buildings around you (at least on 3 of the sides)

I was travel weary and had read up about the history, and this square actually brought me to tears. So pretty and if you have read up, quite moving. Go to Dulceria Colonial on the south end of the square.

We stayed in a small hotel close by so we walk to the Independence Square and really enjoyed it. People were sitting and enjoying the warm weather. Nice to have a coffee in the small cafés.

We enjoyed the changing of the guard ceremony on Monday. The President of Ecuador was out on the balcony for this as well when he is in town. Beware of pick pockets and there are lots of people selling sunglasses, scarves, food, etc.

There always seems to be a lot going on here. There are musicians, street entertainers and vendors as well as hordes of locals just gathered to meet and greet. All the sites radiate off the square, but the churches on the square make a great...More

In order to make you and your family safe, as in other Latin American countries make sure you take a hotel taxi or one that is called by your hotel. After you arrive in the old town, don't bring all your fancy jewelry, put... More
