Lima center is ugly, the city is dirty, the transport is a chaos, the weather is polluted, the shops around are kinda dangerous but Lima center has a very important attraction, it was the hub of Europe with South America, so you can find here the best historic attractions of the 1800's the Plaza de Armas, The mayor's palace, the... The Cemetery General Museum "Presbyter Matías Maestro" is a historical monument located in the Barrios Altos (Cercado de Lima), city of Lima, capital of Peru. Inaugurated on May 31, 1808, it was the first pantheon of the city since previously the burials were realized in some of the different churches. After all the dreadful things I had read about Lima, I was very pleasantly surprised to find this area to be beautiful and safe to walk around even with a camera dangling from my neck. The colonial buildings, especially the intricate balconies, are a delight and there is so much to see in the centre with museums, churches, monasteries. It... More

Peru has done an outstanding job of preserving their colonial past. All the old buildings are in excellent condition and well maintained -- something we didn't expect. The surrounding areas and side streets have also had a lot of attention paid to them. Easy to spend hours browsing the area. We particularly liked the Gold Museum located in an old... More

We loved Lima. Most people just use it as a base to fly into and out of again to Cuzco or whatever, but the Spanish Colonial City centre is well worth your time. The Place de Armas is sublime, dominated by the magnificent Cathedral with the grave of the conquistador Francisco Pizarro. We had a wonderful visit there. The Merced... More

Lima's historical centre is surprisingly different from European plazas. I am used to seeing all productivity centred around the historical centre and in Lima, this is slightly different. Although the area around is not entirely safe, I do recommend doing a daytime visit. The buildings are gorgeous and if you are staying in Miraflores, it's good to also see this... More

There are plenty of tours of the centre of Lima and I would advise you take one of these. There is so much history, that you may miss an important place. Having said that you can also just stroll around yourself. It is safe to just walk around and plenty to see.
