It is a citadel made of mud, on the coast north of Lima, made by the ancient inhabitants of the area, before the Inca culture. It was built and existed between the year 3000 and 1800 before Christ. It is located about three hours from Lima

I have not Heard about it untill I started reading about Peru. Dates back to the same time as early Egyptian pyramids but not in as good conditions. The site and the story are fascinating. How many peaceful civilization do we know off (no weapons found so far) - that in it self deserves exploration. Very much worth taking time... More

This seems to be the first and oldest city in America. It is a very extensive place and very interesting. There are local guides that explains everything and tells a lot of history. Really liked this place

Things to know about visiting Caral. Is a 3 hours drive from Lima. The last 10 km is on an unpaved road so really bumpy. The place is well maintained and growing in the amount of visiting tourists. So go now when its not overwelmed yet. The guides are well knowledged and fun to listen to. Not all speak English,... More

Very interesting site. Best to allow 2 days for the visit a long four + hour drive on the Pan-American north from Lima. Not many tour companies have trips therefore best to rent a car and drive yourself. Good guides available at Caral.

We were only here a short time ,but were impressed by the museum. It was very well laid out and the information was in both Spanish and English. We were only able to do the drive through tour of the ruins, but it was fascinating to see the work that had already been done.

The oldest city in the Americas, this archeological wonder takes a while to get to from Lima (3-4 hours). The tour I went on was rushed and we were not given much time to explore on our own. You must enter the site with an authorized guide and they have the standard route down, so you can't vary. It's a... More

Caral is a nice ways out of town from Lima, this day trip is going to be a little of a let down if you've already gone to Machu Picchu, but it is definitely worth seeing if you got time to kill in Lima. The museum on site is small but very beautifully built and maintained.

Caral was the highlight of a 13 day trip to Peru. Our holiday itinerary was put together with the help of Real World who specialise in holidays in South America. We had a private tour, setting off from Lima, which is a 3.5 hr drive, primarily on the motorway, until you near the site when the final 40 mins or... More
