Built in the form of a circular tower on a massive slab of granite, this sacred edifice contains the famous Intiwatana, or sun dial, which the Incas used to "tie down" the sun at the winter solstice each year.

It's hard to rate individual parts of MP on their own, but the Temple of the Sun is one of the more spectacular buildings. As with other parts of MP, the stone work is incredible.

Completed the Inca Trail hike, reaching the Sun Gate at 6.30am. Great views of the valley but Machu Pichu was largely covered in cloud. I'm not sure I'd bother with the walk up to the Sun Gate.

Machu Picchu contains several temples, of which this is one. You'll visit them all while you're there. It is worth having a guide as then the solstice and sun based construction and purpose will be explained to you. All of Machu Picchu is excellent.

There are several temples within the main site of Machu Picchu and all are worth visiting. The construction on this is particular to the winter solstice and so therefore particularly stunning in construction.

Watching the sunset was magnificent.Going there after Montana was difficult but worth the aching limbs. The view made me forget my tiredness.

Interesting architecture and get a guide who can explain the various buildings. Enjoy the view, so you may end up spending a few more hours. Leave early in the morning.
