- Island_GirlOzBrisbane, Australia98 contributionsCould be so much better.Someone who genuinely loves gardening should step in here - and soon. These gardens could be so good. The potential is there. For starters the current condition of the road to the gardens is disgraceful and made for a very uncomfortable taxi ride and is not recommended for those with back problems. The entry area and immediate surrounds are immaculate. Unfortunately, that is the best of it. As a keen gardener my visit was to gain knowledge, but no plants are labelled? which would be so easy to do There was no guide or garden staff to provide answers to my questions. The outer paths are quite dangerous and not very appealing. I feel that the FJD$25 entry fee (used to be $15) is excessive for what I experienced and so my rating is actually 2 stars. The third star was for opportunity to see not one, but a second mongoose as well during my walk.Visited April 2023Written 7 April 2023
- HahnTravelsLiverpool, Australia1,227 contributionsEnjoyed the gardensGardens here are nice, colourful and and varied. Reasonably easy to wamder around. Was a warm, sunny day when we went. In wet weather would be more difficult. Track that heads to a lookout is a bit more difficult but worth the view. Complimentary juice on finishing was fantastic. Friendly staff. - gypsy_janeAdelaide, Australia550 contributionsEnjoayable with bonus exercise session involvedVisited Garden of Sleeping Giant during month of June. Walked through the tropical gardens and up a steep hill to overlook Nadi, Port Denarau and beyond. Climb to top for lookout was exhaustive but worth the effort. Word of advice…. Take water. At the conclusion of trek we were given a tropical drink for our efforts. Allow about one hour. A bit overpriced at $25FJD per adult but who comes this far and misses out.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2023

- Melinda S7 contributionsMost beautiful gardenThis is one of the most beautiful, colorful places I've ever visited. We went on a rainy day, which was actually perfect, because it brought out all the colors of the flowers, the plants, everything! Just listening to the rainfall on the plants and ground was magical. A must visit!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 August 2023
- GrandvisitorWhitianga, New Zealand315 contributionsWell worth a visitWe needed to hire a taxi to visit these gardens, once off the main road the local road was very much in need of maintenance. Be prepared for a very bumpy ride. The gardens themselves are well worthwhile visiting, lots of beautiful orchids, however I was a little disappointed that there was only one variety, although lots of colours. There was also some lovely flowering trees in particular the Star bush from Papua New Guinea.Visited July 2023Written 15 August 2023
- Rowan HCairns, Australia1,355 contributionsPoor mans botanic gardensThe garden of the sleeping giant was established in 1977 by late actor Raymond Burr and has served as a botanic gardens of sort since his passing. It features plants indigenous to Fiji. Firstly the logistics of getting here are a bit complicated. Its located north of Nadi. To get here you need to drive along the queens road, but then turn off and travel a number of kilometres down a dirt road. I don’t believe you can access here on public transport. At least not without a long walk anyway. Car hire would be ideal - parking is available free of charge. Alternatively a taxi can be arranged from Nadi but I imagine it would cost a bit. Its generally included as a stop in most of the day tours of Nadi. The cost of entry is 25FJD each. This affords the customer a approximately 45 minute walk along a boardwalk and a complementary non alcoholic beverage at the end. On the positives the display of orchids was impressive. On the negatives - a lot of the boardwalks were broken at the time of our attendance and a few were under repair. Given the fairly high cost of entry I was a bit disappointed by this. I also felt the garden was quite small given the cost of entry. I thought for the cost and logistics of travel this attraction was fairly average. It doesn’t really hold enough weight on its own to justify a visit and only really serves as part of a larger tour of the Nadi area, in my opinion.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 August 2023
- kiwitripper64Auckland Central, New Zealand614 contributionsUnexpected delightStunning area that has been wonderfully landscaped. The road to get here is a bit rough but worth the drive. Once here you enter the gardens and the temp drops a few degrees to a nice comfortable setting. There are more orchids and plants here than I could fathom. There is a walk to an observation point. This is in the open, uphill and hot, but there is an amazing panorama at the top. Bring cash.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 August 2023
- Jeff Y144 contributionsUnderwhelmingI was frankly expecting more especially for 25 FJD. Tricky to find and like most places in Fiji, requires a drive down a very rough dirt road. There were some flowers in the first portion and then the rest of the park is boardwalk through the jungle and then a steep climb up to a rise with a pleasant, but not amazing, view out toward the ocean. Kept thinking maybe I had missed something, but nope, I saw it all. Enjoyed a free drink back at the reception area and then moved on. Not bad overall, but not a great value.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 September 2023
- Julene MWellington, New Zealand8 contributionsPlant lovers and nature walk paradiseI really love plants and orchids in particular so this was a lovely walk. It’s about a 30 min loop through a tropical forest type setting. Bug spray is a must. Would recommend early or late in the day to avoid the large tourist buses.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 January 2024

$25 FJD/person entry for some orchids and walk over disintegrating forest board walk. Lookout was not worth the hot hike, orchids at the start and initial forest canopy area were all that's worth seeing in our opinion which could be done in 10-15 mins, included fruit juice at the end was a nice touch. The government need to fix the entry road too (nothing to do with this operator). Overall we were disappointed.

No where near the amount of orchids advertised. This is just a walk through typical countryside and not worth the admission fee - even with the great juice they provide.

The gardens are lovely but it is small we were there for less than an hour and thought the $25 per head a bit high for what it was. The free tropical juice is a great touch. Staff are excellent.

This is an easy taxi ride from Nadi hotels and definitely worth the visit - especially if you get there soon after they open (9:00 AM). The flowers in the soft light are very impressive and this makes for a great "introduction to the jungle" experience because there are so many aspects to enjoy: vines, trees, orchids, lotus flowers in ponds. etc. Be sure to wear good walking shoes (tennis shoes not sandals) as the trail can get steep, especially if you do the optional 15-minute hike over unpaved trail to the spectacular lookout point.

We saw many critical reviews, but decided to see it for ourselves since it’s right next to the mud pool/hot springs and our moms love orchids. The orchid collection is stunning. While it is a smaller botanical garden, it does offer a lovely stroll and a minor hike if you want to take in the lookout. Instead of focusing on the amount of flora on display, we suggest just being in the moment and enjoying the overall vibe of the gardens. Oh don’t forget to have a ride on the swings, cuz who doesn’t enjoy a good ole swing?!

I am only able to walk slowly needing frequent rest stops, I also need handrails for steps. Are there walks that would suit me for a 40min visit ? (part of a day tour).

Hi,
There are seats but no rail on stairs.
It is a small garden to be honest and not very rocky but to see some small parts you need to go up to the stairs.
I would say you will enjoy bird songs but you wont be able to see all area.

I also booked the tour through a guide so cannot answer your question about the entrance fee. It was a wonderful visit as the gardens are very beautiful and peaceful. I would definitely recommend going there. The guide explained in detail about all the orchids.

How long would you spend in the Garden of Sleeping Giant? Are there any walking/hiking trails? Restaurants?

You can spend as much time there as you want if you're really into nature and flowers. There were a few tracks for hiking and there was a café in there but not sure can't remember exactly what they served.

How long does it take to walk through the whole garden? As I have also booked temple visit and need to catch my flight in the afternoon. Many thanks.

Fiji has recovered from cyclone Winston, which was in February 2016. I don't know why the gsgfiji website is not currently available, but there can be power can cable issues at times. One option is to contact fiji.travel to see if they can provide more information. We recently spent two weeks there and had a wonderful and relaxing time. The Fijian people are among the friendliest in the world.

This may sound like a silly question but r there any mosquitos in this area?
My wife is 20 weeks pregnant and we're very cautious of Zika.
Thanks

Yes there are mosquitoes in Fiji. I traveled there in June/July with my Pregnant wife and had no problems. There has been no reported cases of Zika in Fiji according to the government health body. Arrogated can by bought from shops and chemist in Fiji.
