The hill from Atuona was a bit steep in the hot sun, but it was worth it to reach the cemetery where Paul Gauguin is buried. Also buried there is the Belgium singer Jacques Brel. People were stunned when I asked who Brel was, but...More

If you are a fan of Paul Gauguin or Jacques Brel (I had not heard of the latter) then the cemetery where they are buried is worth a visit. Otherwise go for the wonderful view. It is quite a hot climb so go by vehicle.

The twenty minute walk uphill to the cemetery from the town is worth the effort if you have an interest in the history of the Marquesas islands. To see the tombs of the famous painter, Paul Gaugin and the famous singer Jacques Brel and know...More
