I did a 5 day self-guided trek along with my girlfriend that we booked through ZigZag Holidays. We found the company professional to deal with and went to the office for a talk about the trek on the day before leaving. We were given plenty of information and an excellent map of the mountains - the person dealing with us highlighted the alternative routes for each day. The mountains are spectacular and has a great range of treks - challenging and easier.
We were given vouchers for each night's accommodation, dinner and lunch.
On the first evening there was a little confusion regarding the accommodation - we were initially told to go to one hut but on our voucher it listed another. We also were under the impression that we were getting dinner included on the first night, but we had to pay.
The accommodation varied greatly so I'll write a little about the different places we stayed:
Tchinata on the first night - Great food, nice atmosphere, basic clean room - a perfect place to stay
Rilski Ezera on the second night - A terrible place, very dirty - we didn't have a shower because it was so dirt. Food was okay - nothing special.
Ivan Vazov Hut on the third night - A basic place but with very friendly hosts and a great atmosphere. A very nice place to stay with good food.
The hotel beside the monastery on the final night - I can't remember the name of this hotel but it was fantastic with nice big rooms - a lot more than we expected. The dinner was great here too.
So overall the accommodation was mixed with the Rilski Ezera hut being the only place that was bad. The packed lunch we got each day was great.
I got the impression that many people do the self-guided trek as there was confusion at times about our vouchers and the lunches and dinners that were included.
I think you could probably organise the trek without the assistance of ZigZag and probably save a little money but overall I'd recommend ZigZag, especially if you are not from Bulgaria. When you add up the different accommodation and meals, I think it was good value from money.

Fantastic company to deal with. Friendly, adaptable and understands the needs of its clients very well, very flexible and will try an accommodate bespoke travel as much as possible. Cannot rate them highly enough. Our guide Mitko gave advice and changed the hike according to the weather and gave us options. Great thanks to Lacho for organising an unseasonably early hike to the Rila Lakes.

Lacho was fantastic, cheery and unbelievably helpful answering my many questions and going out of his way to make my life easier. He even took me to a money exchange around the corner. He was proactive in finding a solution to make my trip work. Thanks.

This morning was spent at the fantastic Dragoman And Aldomirovis Marsh karst complex, with Zig Zag. Booming bitterns, shrikes galore, ferruginous ducks, warblers (inc barred and great reed) and raptor heaven. Brilliantly led and looked after throughout. A massive thank you.

The point is when I arrived I had no idea what could be done but a lots about what could not be done. The staff spent spontaneously hours with me talking about the diverse possibilities and finalely I stated all my wishes for this trekk and they were all answered. What was only a wish became a real and very enjoyable trekk in the Rhodope mountain. Thank you.

We went on Zig-zag’s Highlights of Bulgaria Tour. Lacho at the office was efficiency itself, and arranged the extension of the tour to include the Septemvri narrow-gauge railway. He also arranged for us to travel to Thessaloniki after the tour. Everything went exactly as planned, and Ivan was an excellent and extremely conscientious guide. We enjoyed all the places we visited and felt that we had got a good taste of what Bulgaria has to offer and some understanding of its history. (In addition, Ivan, having discovered that I like trains, arranged for us to go from Veliko Tarnovo to Kazanlak by train instead of car, which was a pleasing bonus.) We felt that the choice of hotels was good too - they were all individual, and just right for us.

I was recommended here by my Hostel for hiking advice and maps. The guys here were all very friendly and helpful. Fluent English and obviously very familiar with the areas I was asking about. I left confident about my hiking trip.

My husband and I are interested in trekking in the Rodopi Mountains sometime this June. We'd like to do this for 7 days-hiking hut to hut. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about doing this? We'd like to do this by ourselves; if you can give ideas for accommodations and transferring this would be great. Thanks
