This wonderful lion is the symbol of the city. Very good example of how interesting this city can be, it lays between Agia Sofia Church and Alexander Nevski Church. Wonderful spot for a wonderful picture!

Sofia doesn't have a tremendously proud military history. They're a small country who guessed wrong (sided with Germany) in both world wars. Plus the monument is very utilitarian, Soviet looking - which is not a good look for memorials. There isn't much to see here.

This monument is nothing but an insult to the people living in this country. However it should be kept there as a reminder of the dark times and for this country to remember its painful past

As all communistic monuments this one is a disgrace to history, culture and art. Good that it is kept, so reminds us all what not to build. If you are a skater - thats your place...

The graffiti on this monument is ever changing. If you can dodge the skateboarders, it is fun to get up close and think about how this monument that was so significant to the Communist occupiers is now updated with spray paint.

I go pass it every day and often stop and enjoy the monument, just for a second, just so i could feel it's spirit.

The flame represents the unknown soldiers and some of the soil and remains are in a casket below the flame.

The monument was erected as a remembrance of the hundreds of thousands of Bulgarian soldiers who died for their country in wars waged by the Bulgarian state.
