This place is guarded by soldiers but do not be afraid. You can talk to them that you are here to take a look at the map of El Salvador then they will let you in. The map shows every tourist attraction so it would be good place to review the places that you would have visited.

Came by this museum by an accident. Quite big when you are inside. We spend some hours there and really enjoyed the museum. If you have time it is a must see in San Salvador.

Yesterday, my taxi driver and I visited the Military Museum El Zapote in San Salvador. Jose had driven us to Perquin and El Mozote, so this museum was definitely the other side of the conflict. With plenty of hardware (helicopters, jet, trucks, and the Pope-mobile!) there is plenty to look at. Then there are the rooms full of presidential portraits,... More

The group I was with - adults and children - was pleasantly surprised by what we could learn about the country's history. Being a military museum of course the focus is mostly on the military's role in the evolution of the country up to involvement in Iraq in the 90s.

Given El Salvador’s 12-year civil war that began in 1980, military history is a prominent aspect of Salvadorian culture. This smallish museum features military vehicles, tanks, various uniforms adorning mannequins, firearms—all housed in what appears to be former officers’ quarters. I found most interesting the topographical relief map of El Salvador depicting scale of volcanoes and valleys in Central America’s... More

Stopped here briefly with a tour group. It was late, and the museum was closed, but we were told it pretty much tells the story of the Civil War (1980-92) from the military's point of view (rightist). Outside there is a huge topographical model of the entire country, so you get a good sense of how volcanic it is.

Historical exhibits from the recent and not too recent past. Also a large map of El Salvador that gives you an interesting perspective of the country.

There is some El Salvador military history in the museum; however, overall was not all that impressed.

I'm usually a big history fan, but really wasn't that impressed by this place. It is mostly uniforms on maniquins, guns, military vehicles, and walls of portraits in cheap frames. Maybe I was missing out because I'm not a Spanish speaker, but you very much have to know what you're looking at to get much value out of it. Still,... More
