Architecturally the structure is not astounding. There was a mural by a noted artist that was removed by the current archbishop so the façade is even less notable. Still, the main church is located close to other landmarks, does not have an admission fee, is peaceful, and has historical significance. Whether you visit to admire the interior murals or spend time in the cool, peaceful environment to meditate and pray, it is a must-visit site.

Be sure to research the location and related occurrences prior to visiting to maximize the experience.

Lovely cathedral
Jun 2021
Located in the main downtown area, this is a lovely little cathedral. Probably need all but 30 minutes here, max.

Spectacular Cathedral!
Dec 2020 • Solo
This was definitely one of my favorite building in all of San Salvador. The architectural design is flawless, both inside and outside. I loved the memorial to Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was brutally killed back in 1980, and became a hero of this small nation. Just beautiful at every corner, especially the painted dome!

Monumental building
Mar 2020
An impressive monumental building, it cannot be said that it is an architectural masterpiece, but it makes an impression. Unfortunately failed to get inside.

Beautiful interior, Calm city centre oasis
Mar 2020 • Solo
From the outside this is an interesting building and on the inside it is both an oasis of calm from the city centre hustle and bustle and a beautifully decorated altar and side chapels.

I am not religious but I found this both a beautiful and calming place.

Proverbial must see so why not
Feb 2020 • Solo
Just another church out of the hundreds that I have seen in my life. But of course you have to see it because not much else to see in SS. It is a magnificent structure and the inside is very nice also. Close to all the other major sites in el centro so make sure you stop by.

Metropolitan cathedral, San Salvador
Jan 2020 • Couples
Though not as imposing as cathedrals in Other places, its a nice calm place to spend some time. This was first constructed in1842 which got demolished in an earthquake in 1873. It was built again by 1888. Once again it was damaged in 1951. The third time it was opened again in 1999 March. A tiled mural facade which was done then got stripped off in 2012.

Saint Romero
Dec 2019 • Solo
This cathedral is nothing like the iglesia de Rosario, but was popular with local due to the saint Romero and the shrine to him on the lower level. Quite moving hearing about the work he did for the voiceless

If you are in Downtown San Salvador
Dec 2019
We did a City Tour of San Salvador with Salvadorean Tours and visited downtown on foot. Metropolitana Cathedral is located right in the central plaza. The central plaza was quite crowded. We came on a Friday on December 20 late in the afternoon around 4 pm.

It is worth a quick look inside.

A must if you visit the city center
Jul 2019
El Salvador is a catholic state, so a visit to the city center has to include the Cathedral. Inside is huge, the altar is impressive, and you feel peace inside!
