Located near the Plaza dela Revolution, this Antiguo Catedral can be easily visited. Entrance is not allowed due to the danger imposed of falling bricks and other materials.
I briefly took pictures of this cathedral and wondered how it might have looked prior to being damaged by the earthquake.

Very few old cathedrals in this decayed state exist around the world. It’s a shame this one is roped off to stop visitors but that must now be for safety’s sake. Worth a look if you are in the area.

The Antigua Catedral or "old cathedral" is a beautiful piece of architecture in the heart of Managua.
The structure is only to be observed from afar, as you are unable to go inside due to the aging state of the structure.
If you would like to see a beautiful piece of history in the capital of Managua, the Antigua Catedral is a must see. Managua is filled with such history and the city tries to preserve what is left of it.
We went during the COVID-19 pandemic, some months after the pandemic started. The Antigua Catedral was still open at the time and is still currently accepting visitors. The Catedral closes fairly early, at 1PM noon.

It's good to see from outside. I wanted to go inside but everything was closed because the church collapses. Such a shame.

This Cathedral was built in 1928 with an elegant European style but in 1972 during the earthquake the structure suffered major damage therefore it hasn’t been in use since that date. The big clock on the right tower stops at 12.35 am, the time of the earthquake. If you love history you most go there.

Government corruption and just neglect have left this ornate structure a near ruin. Unlike similar structures in Granada or even in Guatemala, the Cathedral Antigua de Managua is in need of restoration and soon. Otherwise, there are a few plaques outside and inside the building that detail the history of the cathedral as well as how it fit into the local religious, cultural and political history. Be prepared to do some walking and maybe grab a taxista who does not over charge and who knows the local historical sites to see. Otherwise a bus ride is fine. Brush up on your Spanish or have your traveler's "Spanish" memorized. I do not recommend having your phone out while using a translator app. By the way, the information plaques about the cathedral are in Spanish.

Visiting the cathedral from the outside and sightseeing all the sorrounding buildings is the right way to understand Managua and its history. This area used to be the center of Managua in the 70's, today it is part of the must to visit places in the capital city

There isn’t much to do besides look at the building and read things on it. It was really hot on the outside. Around it is really pretty though.
