About
This 265-hectare national treasure is located within Panama City’s Ancon district, and is the only protected area in Central America located within city boundaries. Standing along the Panama Canal’s eastern shore, it’s home to dozens of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and trees. With lookout points, four well-marked trails, a scenic road and a Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute canopy crane structure, guests can explore on their own. The Park also offers guided tours to groups for a fee (five-person minimum) if booked well in advance.

We were staying in downtown Panama City and wanted to see a little nature without spending all day traveling. The park was under 10 minutes and a $5 Uber ride away from downtown. We got to the park about 9am and paid the $4 entry fee, were briefed by staff and off we went.
The trails are wide and clearly marked.
We saw monkeys, turtles, coatis, deer and many birds. Sadly no sloth spotting for us.
We spent about 3 hours leisurely walking the park doing all the trails and taking time to view the wildlife and some great views of the city.
If you'd like to see a little bit of nature without taking a tour or long ride in to the countryside this park is a good place to visit.

I was surprised by how great this park was for being in the city. Take an uber to the "Metropolitan National Park Visitor Center" and the staff will explain (in detail if you want) the layout of the the park.

The trails are well taken care of and we saw more animals than we expected. Sloths(!), leaf-cutter ants, turtles, two types of monkeys, vine snake, caotis (little racoon-like animals), a beautiful mantis, lizards, centipedes, and tons of birds and butterflies. Not the mention an uncountable number of beautiful, luscious tropical plants.

We took one way up to where you get an amazing view of Panama City, and then the other way down. We recommend taking the easier way up, and the more hilly way down (the staff will tell you which are easier). You could do it 2 hours if you hiked quickly, but if you like to appreciate the flora and fauna, it'll take you 3 hours. Arrive early to see lots of animals.

The longest way is the best one (1h +-) for animals cause i heard 5 monkeys in 16h! The access of the park is +- easy by bus from Albrook Mal!

As noted, the location is really convenient and the views from the Mirador top are great.

My husband and I decided to run from our hotel in the El Cangrejo neighborhood to the park. This was a bit of a challenge due to lack of sidewalks in some areas but doable if you are up for a little adventure.

Once we reached the park, we had a great experience. There were plenty of maps, so we never had to worry about getting lost. The hill was pretty steep on the way to the top, but totally worth it. There were also easier trails near the park entrance. All the paths were well-groomed and easy to follow, whether walking or running. They were also not at all crowded, which is a welcome change from the rest of the city. Visit Metropolitan National Park and enjoy the challenge!

If you don't have the time, courage, hope or energy for a more demanding multi-day trip outside of Panama City, or you have small children, this is the perfect choice. A short distance from the center, cheap by taxi, begins a real tropical park. Good markings, groomed sidewalk, several real animals we met. At the top is a beautiful view of the whole city, worth those 2 hours walk ....

There are a number of hiking trails within this park. We did them all and it took us just under three hours. The longest trail reaches to a peak with great views of the city below.

Great views of the past overshadowed by the current view of Panama City. Great history for "Panama Past"

Easy hike/walk, but lots of uphill ... Some wildlife, less than expected. Not as scenic as expected. But, great views of Panama City and surrounding area.

Enjoyed Ancon Hill more.

While this sprawling park is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city it's nestled within, it's worth managing your expectations if you're coming here expecting sloths and monkeys at every turn: we saw none, and only caught sight of a single vaguely exotic bird. That said, the greenery is lovely, and the sweeping panoramas (Panamaramas?) from the summit are a sight to behold. The hike up and back, even for two averagely fit guys in their early 40s, was tougher than the 'moderate' label attached to the upper trail, although that might have had something to do with the 35°C heat.

If, like us, you have no luck with the sloths and monkeys, be sure to visit the Mariposario Metropolitano while at the park for some quality time with stunning Panamanian butterflies.
