Stayed at Panamá Hilton on balboa ave. Beautiful views of the water and boats. On Sunday they close down the street for bicycles and walkers to exercise. Lot to do in area all within walking distance

How does one rate a street? Well, nice street with water on one side and skyscrapers on the other. If you go any place in the city, you will drive on Balboa.

If you're going almost anywhere in the CBD, you'll end up on Balboa. Parts of it are quite attractive with stunning views of the skyline.

We walked over to Balboa Avenue excited to wander along and explore what appeared to be a lovely water-front major avenue. Shops! Restaurants! It looks amazing in the photographs.

But we were very disappointed. As with much of Panama City - it looks way better from a distance. Know that the city is not very pedestrian friendly. Many downtown sidewalks are marked by ankle breaking holes, broken areas, and mismatched heights. One must be quite vigilant to walk the sidewalks even in the "nicer" areas.

Crossing a street is often a very risky thing. There are few traffic light crossings and where there's no light but a "cars must stop" cross walk painted on the street...well, many drivers ignore those "must stop" crossings. Watch-out!

Even when trying to cross a street filled with stopped cars, watch for the motor bikes roaring along in the gutter or between the stopped cars. Danger lurks everywhere.

Once you make your way to Balboa Avenue - we were disappointed by few restaurants and uninteresting shops. In all - we were very disappointed and cannot recommend this area despite the lovely-appearing photographs.

We had two evening walks along this promenade. Anyone visiting Panama City should take the time to explore this area. Wonderful city views and plenty of vendors along the path, if you get thirsty.

There is so much history and places to visit. Here are just a few places to see: Panama Viejo (Old Panama), the Old Quarter, Rain Forest, Miraflores Locks,San Lorenzo National Park, Embera Village and any of the museums.

If time allows you definitely get an hour walk to admire on one side the futuristic buildings of the new city and on the other get the taste of old in Casco Viejo. Best if you can do a double stroll as the day and the night view have each their charm.
Now if you drive there it can get a bit crazy even with a GPS on as the street is split in individual one-ways and in case you need to return there are only dedicated turns where you can do that.
Also during big events like the Carnival it gets partially closed . Normally they would close the part towards Casco Viejo so you will need a big detour on a parallel street to get back on the main avenue. We experienced such issue during last Carnival and we had to drive parallel up to Calle 42 to be able to past from south to north back into the Avenue.

Nice to stroll along the water. Good people watching. Lots of vendors. 45 minute walk to Casco Vieja from the other end. Bike path and walking path. Nice photo ops.

Didn’t enjoy the smell at low tide, however.
