Seeing this building will be the highlight of your trip to Augusta. It is a grand and majestic building. Well kept up. Stands out in the neighborhood. The dome is made of copper. But when we visited it, it was nog light green (corrosion color of copper), but more dark brownish. Give it time...

Originally by Bulfinch the Capitol has portraits of all Governors, Hall of Flags, House and Senate Chambers. Free tours are very interesting and Legislators in Action (relative term) can be seen from January to June (odd numbered years) or March (even numbered years)

We were lucky enough to catch the 10 a.m. tour. The docent was impassioned and well-informed, so was able to share a 'treasure' that quite obviously is important to her. The pictures, mostly portraits, were diverse and the nearly-hour tour flew by! Most State Houses are stuffy, be prepared for this one ... it may be a bit plain inside,... More

Not the best time to take exterior photos of the Capitol, as repairs are being done, disappointing. No idea on when it will be finished.

This is what a State house should look like. I did feel that the security was adequate but not outstanding. I am a retired Judge and security has always been important to me.

On our continuing quest to visit every state capitol. Easy to find and ample free parking. Then drive down front to see huge landscaped park riverside in front of building. Took some impressive photos and enjoyed a relaxing rest in the large open area and under the many large trees. Beautiful day.

My son and I are on a quest to visit all state capitals, and you never can predict which ones will be most interesting or why. For instance, we have loved the capitals in Charleston, WV and Montpelier, VT. But this capital in Augusta was just a dud. It wasn't awful, but there was nothing particularly special about it to... Saw from a distance and drove to see close up. Very impressed. Columns, rotunda roof and statue on top, classic.

Self guided tour to the Maine Capital Building. Interesting if you like history. Kids may not be all that into it. Beautiful views of Capital Park. Also visit the memorial around the capital, the park and the museum. A great day and if the Cross Cafe is open in Cross office building. YUMMY FOOD!

My husband and I enjoy touring state capitols and this capitol tour did not disappoint. Our tour guide, Dan, was fantastic and such a wealth of information. We learned so much in a short amount of time. We would definitely recommend the guided tour to really appreciate the building and the history of Maine.
