Welcome to the "Arco de Santa Catalina"! A beautiful arch and a landmark of Antigua! At the beginning of the 17th century, there were two convents - the "Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción de María" and the "Convento de Santa Catalina Mártir" - and the cloistered nuns. As the convents expanded to the other side of the existing street, the nuns were authorized to build a passage connecting the constructions. A "closed" arch was the solution then envisaged - the cloistered nuns would cross the street without being seen by any passerby. They would never imagine that, nearly 400 years later, the "Arco de Santa Catalina" would be an iconic symbol of Antigua and that the humble cobbled street would be worldly known as "Calle del Arco". The convents are still there and house today a cozy hotel - the "Hotel Convento de Santa Catalina". The arch "frames" the awesome "Volcán de Agua" in its background! The classical view of Antigua Guatemala is of the volcano through this arch, in the early morning. It is a good view at other times but probably worth an early visit if possible

This arch is something you cannot miss if you are walking in Antigua. The story is that a convent demanded that the street be closed down so the Nuns could cross without being seen.
