There is a great view of Volcan de Agua from Arco de Santa Catalina early in the morning. You actually can take great photos with the arch framing the Volcano. It's a popular painting to buy in Antigua if you want. The views of Volcan...More

This trip, I didn't have time to do any climbing. I have three volcanoes on three different continents. Sometimes she was shy, but we saw her most days standing over us indifferent to what we were doing.

On clear days, get the best views from the tops of buildings. Volcano is impressive, and spookily close to the town.

I climbed Agua from Santa Maria de Jesus, starting at 6AM. The climb took 3:15 (this is a fast pace) going up. The summit is, unfortunately, completely messed up with various antennas and small buildings. The descent took 2:10.

We were lucky enough to see Volcan de Agua erupting from a distance. I never thought I would ever see a volcano eruption in person. Maybe the coolest event I have ever witnessed!

This is quite a sight from just about anywhere in Antigua. Many years ago, the capital on Guatemala was located on the side of Agua. That predated the move of the capital to Antigua. This perfectly shaped cone is awesome to see!
