Due to its unique natural features, magnificent forests and extraordinary geomorphologic structures, the area of Velika and Mala Paklenica was proclaimed a national park in 1949. The main reason for proclaiming this area a national park was the protection of the largest and best preserved forest complex in the territory of Dalmatia, which was threatened by overexploitation. The Paklenica National Park stretches on the area of 95 km2 , on the littoral slope of South Velebit under the zone of highest mountain peaks Vaganski vrh (1752) and Sveto brdo (1753).

Even if you are not the athletic type, a hike in Paklenica Big Canyon can be done. The trail can be easily walked up to the mountain house in 3 hours. Along the trail there are two wells for filling up your bottle with fresh water (might dry up during long hot summers, though), the Paklenica creek runs along the... More

We visited in early march - so v cold - walking along main path was great (paved albeit slightly slippery at parts). National park is really well protected so lots to look out for. Scenery is second to none. However after branching off at the last hut, and continuing on what we thought was just a hiking trail, we ended... More

Nice fresh air, conveniently located 30 min from Zadar. Not far from the bunkers opens a view of the impressive rock of Anica Kuk (712m/asl), the most famous rock for climbing in Croatia.

Paklenica, is with North Velebit best location for people who like to hike. It is highest part of Velebit, with plenty of hiking paths, and shelters.

The Paklenica karst river canyon is a national park in Croatia. It is located in Starigrad at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain. There are two canyons: Mala (small) and Velika (big) Paklenica. Near the entrance into the park there is an artificial cave complex that was built for Josip Broz Tito during times of tension between Yugoslavia and the... More

Wonderful place to walk whether you are a climber, mountaineer or just a tourist. Velika Paklenica National park is more rocky and there are thousands of climber routes, while Mala Paklenica is more covered with trees, grass and flatter walking paths. Very beautiful places! In summer the temeratures are very high and hot there.
