A wonderful bridge which was rebuilded after the 90's war. The best photos taken from the coast. During the summer is very crowded so autumn is the best time to visit.

This wonderful historic bridge was destroyed in 1993 in the Balkan Wars but has been reconstructed to duplicate the feel of the original. It is beautiful, and I won't go into the history because plenty of others have already, so I won't waste your time or mine. To put it simply, it was a highlight of our trip to Mostar!

Mostar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for Stari Most, a 400-year-old, Turkish-style stone bridge, spanning the beautifully clear Neretva River.

This bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in the entire Balkan region - its elegant, single-pointed arch was a symbol of Muslim society here and the town’s status as the place where East met West in Europe.

The sad history of the bridge is that while it was able to stand for over 400 years and even withstood the weight of Nazi tanks, it collapsed in 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak war (Oct 1992-Feb 1994) after being bombarded by Croat paramilitary artillery shells. After the war ended, the bridge was rebuilt with stone from the original quarry in the exact way it was built so long ago.

Nowadays, self-proclaimed ‘professional’ jumpers hang out on the bridge around the bridge in Speedos, waiting for donations from tourists to jump. Once they collect 50 euros, they plunge off its ledge into the Neretva River below. Locals claim that the jump is perfectly safe, but it is still a thrill to watch.

It's a pretty bridge. Hard to get a good angle to photograph it. Old? No - 30 years maybe. Made to look old but really a reconstruction after the original was destroyed.

Is it worth coming to see? Not really. The rest of the old town is just the usual buskers, beggars, and vendors where every shop sells the same crap as the one previous and the one next.

If there was a place where I thought I might catch Covid on our trip this was it. Nobody paying any attention to masks or hand sanitizing. Everyone packed in like sardines jostling up the street. I can almost feel the Covid crawling on my body.

it was destroyed in 1993. so, the bridge was rebuilt but it looks like a classic old bridge. I suggest walking down to the river to get some nice pictures. And you might as well walk across the bridge.

This is the reason to come here and it's pretty cool. Sadly the original bridge built by Ottomans and lasted 427 years was destroyed by Croatian forces in the 90s war and the bridge was rebuilt. The old town area is small and just a few streets but unique with the bridge and river and the Islam influence. A guy jumped off the middle of the bridge into the river while we were there! It's a long way down. A local man we were talking to gently corrected us that we were in Herzegovina, not Bosnia. We were just saying Bosnia. Mostar is the principal city of Herzegovina, though the capital of the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Sarajevo.

This beautiful, perfectly reconstructed bridge is the star of the city. Restaurants and bars along the river are placed to admire it. It’s usually crowded, even late at night.

For a moment, my husband and I stopped to watch all the people slipping, but no one made it to the floor. There are bumps every half a meter to help you stop, but rubber soles should be worn. People with stroller had to take their babies out and we even saw a senior man giving up his wheelchair. And many young ladies take off their high heel shoes...

Divers jump at different moments of the day or night, with no schedule; it depends on the crowds that gather and the tips they gather.

The Jugoslavian Wars, and in particular the Bosnian War, is a topic I’ve always been very sensitive about. Well, this bridge is the symbol of this terrible tragedy: it was destroyed by bombings, but then it was rebuilt in the name of peace and brotherhood.

It was great seeing the rebuilt bridge. The last time I was in Mostar it was destroyed. There are beautiful views of the river and old town from the bridge.
