Not to be confused with the Sacred Heart Cathedral some blocks away. Saint Joseph's is a pleasant Roman Catholic church well cared for by the local parishioners. Now during Christmas time an image of Jezus as a baby is placed high above the main altar. Joseph and Mary stand next to the altar (each statue at a different side), perhaps an ode to the nuclear family. The church interior is light and decorations are yellow gold, the popular color of Myanmar. Though dedicated to St. Joseph, father of Jezus, sculptures of many other saints like John, Peter, Paul and Matthew have been placed in the main facade and even at the sides.

The church is open on Sundays. I was there in the afternoon. Most of the believers welcome foreigners. Few speak English.
Nicely illuminated after dark.

While strolling back to our hotel on Christmas Eve, we saw this church and were amazed by it being here. We met a young man, who took us around and showed us many young people celebrating Chrstmas together. He also took us to see the inside of the church and it was nice. Didn't know that there are a couple of churches in Mandalay.

Good to see a church in Myanmar and not just Buddhas and Pagodas. Interesting history and pleasing architecture. Lovely Church.

Amidst the dreary nature of Asian city residential and commercial buildings, stands a beautiful Gothic style church. Access is regrettably restricted to the outer courtyard and the front entrance, but even from here one can admire the wonderful Gothic style, and ornate interior. Well worth seeing, if only to see something different.
