Did a brief visit here of 20-30 minutes and could of spent more time to soak in the atmosphere better. The Golden Buddha is a must see but only men are allowed to touch it and put gold leafs on it. There are a lot of other things to see at the Pagoda.

We woke up at 3:30 for attend the face washing ceremony. We arrived the pagoda around 4, there were a number of locals at the gate. During the ceremony, the locals were respectfully praying out loud. If you visit Mandalay, this is a must activity i do recommend.

Interesting to see so many buying or bringing gold leafs to put on the Budda...men only allowed. As we walked through most areas were full of locals who come to worship. Very active and beautiful temple.

Worshipping or shopping? That's an important question in all Burmese Buddhist temples. I visited this place during Thadingyut Festival 2016 and I did see more business than anything else.

Again we go barefoot here in the pagoda. Here is where we can experience the local devotion and piety of the Buddhists in Myanmar. While there are many tourists, one can see a steady stream of locals visiting the Golden Buddha. People bring lotus flowers and the makes buy gold leaf which they put on the Golden Buddha. It is... Mahamyamuni pagoda is a wonderful destination. Not just for the stunning Buddha statue itself, which is truly wondrous to behold. But also for buying cheap affordable gifts to send back home to your loves ones. I rgularly make trips here for the great rattan slippers too, which are a steal at only around 2,000 kyat per pair. Also i love... More

When we walked up to the pagoda there were many stores selling things. You could buy anything and everything. When we finally got to the top it was quite busy. Only men were able to go put gold on the Buddha and there were other tourists who were being very rude to the locals as they did not understand why... More

Just amazing to see the build up of gold leaf on this budda which has been the practice for so many years, I think since about 1947, but not sure. Anyway there are so many thicknesses that the build up has created so many bumps on the usually flat surface. Unfortunately, only males are allowed to enter the sacred crypt... More

As in many Pagodas, you're overwhelmed by the number of stores that try to sell you religious artifacts. The Buddha itself is not looking very nice with all the gold that people stick to it, it has no shape anymore. The place is prohibited to women, only men can add gold to the image On the other end, the Museum... More
