I visited on a Buddhist festival day so the pagoda was packed with worshipers so strolling around was difficult in places. To enter I had to first remove my shoes and socks then negotiate covered arcades packed with people and lined with numerous stalls selling...More

This Mahamuni Pagoda is fantastic. A very holy place and the architecture surrounding the Buddha is amazing with carved jade columns. Very interesting. Beautiful.

Even coming from Bagan where I spent three days looking at pagodas this was a unique one. Watching them apply the gold was definitely memorable and picture worthy. Women are not allowed to do this but you can view it up close from a couple...More

Mahamuni Image is the famous around Myanmar. It is located at the Mandalay. It's open at 4 o'clock and close at 9 o'clock. It's also known as living Buddha.

Really special to see the locals use the gold. What was even more exciting was the ring for caneball (a local sport) at one of the entrances.

Very busy with locals praying. You can only enter to place gold leaf on the budda if you are a man. Interesting to see the large budda statue from the many layers of gold leaf! Different!

The attraction here is the central hall with a large bronze buddha. Over the years, as devotionis have applied layer after layer of gold leaf. the statue has morphed into a extremely fat Buddha, with the "fat" being tons of gold. You can purchase for...More

We did not buy Gold Leaf but it is cheap for the locals to place their offering on the Buddha . The comments above are accurate and the face which is washed at 4 am is the only part of the statue not covered with inches of... More
