We had such an amazing day with Kham - it far exceeded our expectations!! It was just such a lovely day, to spend time with Kham and her daughters and cousin and friend, to hear about life in Laos from when she were young as well as today, to go through the market and learn about the vegetables, to learn how to cook some fantastic dishes and then to eat them on our amazing lunch feast.....it all tasted phenomenal! We cooked 7 dishes and got copies of the recipes to take home, we'll definitely be trying them out when we get back to the UK! We really had the best time with Kham and can't thank her enough:) We would highly recommend this tour and we see it as one of our highlights on our 4 month trip in South Eaat Asia.…

Even with her whole family eating, we had leftovers! This cooking lesson is a MUST DO! Super special experience …

In March 2016, my girlfriend and I had the pleasure of enjoying a late afternoon and evening in Luang Prabang, Laos with our local hosts, chef Kham, husband Henri and their family. Through the Urban Adventures website, we booked their hands-on cooking class in their “home cooked” series. Although transportation to the cooking studio wasn’t included in our initial arrangements, with one phone call, Chef Kham picked us up at our hotel in LP and on the way to their home, took us to her local farmer’s market to select the ingredients for our dinner. The market was an exotic mix of many foods we had never seen and the freshest herbs, veggies and live fish. Walking through the market, Kham was patient explaining what the unfamiliar ingredients were used for in Lao cooking. Bonus - no tourists there! We arrived at a lovely country home to start assembling and cooking our dinner. The menu was varied and fun to make (be prepared for lots of chopping!) including Ground Pork Inside Lemon Grass; deep fried and Fresh Spring Rolls with simple sauce; Chopped White Fish steamed in banana leaf; Steamed Mushrooms; two kinds of rice, salad and a nice sweet dish for dessert. Everything was unbelievably delicious; prep instructions were easy to follow. If we had to single out just one highlight, it would be eating outside in the garden and enjoying a relaxing dinner with Kham’s husband, mother and father, cousin and little ones. Don’t miss this interesting cultural exchange with a warm-hearted Chef and engaging husband!…

This was an amazing experience and I highly recommend it. First, they arranged pick up and drop off directly from my hotel, which I appreciated since the tour started shortly after my arrival in Luang Prabang and I hadn't yet had a chance to orient myself. After a short drive from my hotel I arrived at Kham's house where she began to teach me how to cook Lao food in her spacious open kitchen. I have a few Lao friends who make really amazing food, so I was curious to know how to do this. I am not much of a cook myself, but I was surprised to find out how easy some of these techniques were. Or maybe that's Kham's teaching. She takes you through the recipes step by step, explaining the ingredients and how to use them. She even teaches you how to make sticky rice! After a little over an hour of preparation, we had a 5 course meal that was extra delicious because I helped make it. The meal is shared with Kham and her family in their wonderful outdoor dining area, which gave me a better opportunity to understand some of the Lao culture. Kham's English is quite good and she did a great job of encouraging me throughout the lesson. I did this alone, but this would be great to do as a couple or in a small group too.…
