Great place to see Penguins but beware of choppy waters
We booked an afternoon trip to Isla Magdalena to see the Penguins as we had a day in Punta Arenas after our W Trek. By the time we boarded the water was beginning to get a bit choppy. We made it to Isla Magdalena in 1:15. During the ride we saw some dolphins and penguins swimming close to the boat. Spent an hour on the island and really enjoyed seeing the penguins in their natural habitat. They do a good job keeping visitors to a roped trail so as to not interfere with the penguins. The return however was another story. By this time, the Strait of Magellan had gotten very rough and the boat return was v choppy. The weather was clear and not much wind either but the crew explained that as the Strait is the confluence of the Atlantic and Pacific, colliding currents can cause the water to become choppy without much warning. Several passengers got sick and most of the passengers in the front moved to the back. Finally the crew made the decision to arrive at a closer dock where they had shuttles waiting to take us back to the boarding dock - a 20 min ride. All in all an enjoyable trip to see the penguins but be prepared for choppy waters especially if you are prone to seasickness. I thought the Strait is always calm but clearly not!

Beautiful experience, many penguins and chicks
It's a beautiful experience. We ended December and there are already many chicks to see. The penguins are all over the island and suddenly cross the road. Sailing from Punta Arenas is 2h each way. TABSA has the excursion and is a little cheaper than other agencies.

excellent tour, must see for any penguin lover
The trip out to the island takes about 90 minutes and while we had good seas I can imagine it would be challenging for those with motion sickness if the weather wasn't great. to get off the boat on the island you walk down a steep metal gangway from the boat directly onto the shore. the path is packed direct and has stones throughout so you need to be mindful of this when walking the path. the route is one way about a mile and requires you to climb a hill that gets quite steep towards the middle near the lighthouse. The volume of penguins is significant and you can see that they are comfortable with people as they will walk right across your path without hesitation. You can see them in the water, on land and in their burrows easily. It's well worth the visit and I recommend this to any penguin lover.

We booked this trip through COMAPA, but one has to go to the tres puntas harbour and check-in yourself, not that either is difficult, and at least they cannot be late in picking you up, as they were the day before. The penguins are only on the island during breeding season, ie. summer in Chile. There are 2 boats going to the island, a slow one that is more stable, and a faster one, in which case one also visits the sea lions on a nearby island. We decided to go for the slow boat, to maximise changes of the boat getting to the harbour and minimising the change of sea sickness. The boat trip is along the Magellanic straight, towards punta delgada, and thus towards choppier water, even if it is wind still in Punta Arenas. We were lucky to have wind still and perfect blue skies, but that is rare in Punta Arenas. Along the route there, we sailed passed about 10 or so whales. Did not see a tail, but saw the backs of several and many spouts of air and water. They were very close as well, and seem to be seen rather regularly. On the island there were lots of penguins and lots of seagulls. Both had young or still eggs when we visited. On the island a path is set out on which one has to stay. However, penguins are free to cross it, and do so. They seem rather at ease with the many human tourists, so one gets to see them from very close up. These penguins are also much more active than king penguins sitting on an egg or holding a young one, so you will see them waddle and we saw several going into the sea.

Magdalena Island is about an hour and a half from the coast. Take the bus from Punta Arenas to the port, take a catamaran and continue for an hour and a half by sea. The island has a trail of about a kilometer long, penguins all around. It's perfectly organized. The visit does not disturb the animals. They are visibly calm. It's a great experience. But you have to be lucky with the weather. We only had half of it. On the way back the wind picked up, so the tour of neighboring Marta Island was only through the glass and followed the way back one hour and half past in big waves. However, it is an unforgettable experience and I can only recommend it

Ferry boat was new and comfortable although packed full. Made the trip in 1 hour and 15 minutes each way. Hundreds of penquins were easily viewable from the walkway, including juveniles who were in the process of molting. Many of their burrows (nests) were very close to the walkway. The parents were actively walking from the sea to their chicks. There were as many seagulls as penguins, and a couple of skuas. Great visit.

Please note the company will not cancel boats until the morning of. If the winds are scheduled at 25mph or greater you will be out of luck as the boats will not go out. There is nothing to do in Punta Arenas besides this. They have a small overpriced Fort south of the city called Fort Bulis.

My advice is check the 5 day forecast. If it looks good book a flight to Punta Arenas to see the penguins. If it looks windy and cold do another activity outside of Punta Arenas as the boat will not go out and you will waste both time and money in a boring town.

A visit to Isla Magdalena will offer one of the best wildlife viewings anywhere. It has to be reached from a boat from one of the ports of Punta Arenas. An hour is good enough to walk around the island and see the penguins in their natural habitat up close. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting this island to any traveler and especially those who are interested in seeing wild life.

I took the catamaran tour to Isla Magdalena from Punta Arenas, Chile to see the Magellanic Penguins. I booked the 8:00 AM tour with Denomades. The catamaran we took was named, "Fiordos Del Sur II." The meeting place was Muelle Prat at Avenida Costanera del Estrecho de Magallanes 1398. Unfortunately, our scheduled tour at 8:00 AM was canceled due to the extreme weather in the Strait of Magellan. Luckily, we were able to be re-scheduled on the 1:00 PM tour and it worked out perfect weather wise.

It was an EXCELLENT experience. The male checking us in was friendly and helpful. The three guides on-board the catamaran were wonderful.....young, engaging, friendly, and very knowledgeable. It also helped that the sea was calm and the weather was warm and sunny.

The island is home to about 15,000 Magellanic Penguins (down from 150,000 a few years ago). You walk along a path up to a lighthouse and the penguins are all over the place. Sometimes they cross the walking path right in front of you. You will also see Chilean Skuas and many Kelp Gulls with their babies.

I highly recommend this company and tour! It was a wonderful and memorable experience!

an unforgettable day of exploring. we boarded the bus at 10 am and drove approx 40 min to a place where a passenger boat picked us (and approx 30 other passengers) up. the boat drove approx another 45 min to a first island where we could watch sea lions and cormoran from aboard. the local guide Nee was excellent explaining in Spanish and English. after another 30 min on open water we reaches Magdalena Island with its Penguin colony. lots of beautiful sea gulls too. we were super lucky with abundant sunshine and unseasonable high spring temperatures. getting back on the boat we were greeted with coffee and a little bag of cookies which was very nice. it was a fantastic day and experience and i can highly recommend it

It takes a while to get there (over an hour boat ride) but it is worth it. Magellanic penguins, gulls and Skuas everywhere. There were all ages of penguins, from adults to youngsters a couple of months old. This entire island is a sanctuary so you are restricted to about an hour and you must stay on the path. Overall it was well worth the time and money to go there.

We did the Solo Expeditions trip to see the penguins on Isla Magdalena. Was well organized, Had a great time esp because the weather cooperated ;-). On the way back stopped off shore of another island with a colony of sea lions and then as we were going back to shore we saw a Sei whale. The captain stopped the boat so we could all watch which was much appreciated. The staff were wonderful, especially Sebastian. My only regret was we couldn't do the all day tour they have with whale watching, but we got lucky anyway!

Total disappointment of the place and Punta Arenas! The penguin tour was cancelled twice due to the strong winds. We thought that these cancellations happen occasionally, but in fact they are frequent. You are at the mercy of the winds and need to be very lucky. We wasted 3 days (2 nights) in Punta Arenas hoping to go on this tour. Even if in Punta Arenas weather was sunny and wind was not strong at all, it does not mean that the tour would happen (winds might be strong at the sea and Magdalena island). About the cancellation, we found out on site right before the tour. We tried to call the day of the tour to see if it is cancelled, but could not reach anyone. I frankly felt like we were scammed - if they constantly cancel the tour, why to even offer it to tourists?!

Additionally there is really nothing to do in Punta Arenas. So to find an alternative to do something exciting on the same day is not an option here. It is a waste of time and money unless one is super lucky to get on the tour. If one plans to organise the trip around this tour in Punta Arenas, I would suggest avoiding this place especially for tourists who don’t spend much time in Chile.
