A break from Shantou downtown is the Island. Accessible via a toll bridge. I see bicycles around but hardly see anyone renting them. Nice clean beach to enjoy though.

Took a day-trip from Shantou. The forest park is at the top of a peak. There's a huge stone turtle, and many smaller stone turtles at the park. The air is very fresh..

For those who like the beach, this is known as the Hawaii of the East. For kids who like the sand, there are a few stationary motorized excavators to assist in your sand building ventures. There are also your usual sea scooter and bikes. Interestingly, part of the sea are provided with lane markers like what you see in swimming... More

We found it hard to find a hotel who would accept foreigners, and also to find anyone who would rent out bicycles. The main town is full of characterless high rises. Outside the towns there are quarries everywhere. Tried to cycle through the forest park but were turned back as bikes were not allowed. We wanted to find a secluded... More

Liked: The beaches and scenery are quite lovely. Disliked: The roads are very bumpy & need to be improved.

One of the best beaches in the Chaoshan area. As others have mentioned, it's difficult to get there if you are not familiar with the area. Bus # 105 (5rmb) from around the city center of Shantou will take you to the pier from where you will board a 30 min ferry ride to the Island. Once on the Island,... More

If you also complain that the pollution is very bad in China, this place can change your mind. The seafood there is really fresh and delicious. You can even have some dried seafood back. I have been there several times. The air is fresh and swimming in the sea is really fun. PS, you need to take the ferry to... More

For a chinese beach, this one was great. Getting to the island can be a bit of a hassle though, as some other reviewers have mentioned, so be sure to plan ahead. The island iS quite large, so if you plan to get around and explore, then be sure to get to the pier early.

We often go to the Nan'ao island to have a good time near the sea. The beach is clean and pleasant and the island is beautiful.

We chartered a MPV with driver to Nan'ao Island for a day trip and ended up waiting close to 4 hrs at the pier (due to some fog) just trying to get onto a ship that can bring us to Nan'ao Island. When we finally reached the Island, we just went to a regular seafood joint with seaview and meal... More
