This is part of the Qi Lou area. A nice artsy area that is lined with shops selling art and craft, coffee shops, and also food stalls. Shops are refurbished and the street is converted to a walking street. You can pose for photos with the bronze figures reminding visitors of life back in the early days.

Without an English guidebook it was very difficult to locate Zhongshan Road or any of the Old Haikou roads on a Haikou city map so here is a pretty easy way to find them. Go to Haikou's People Park, walk through to the north side where the bridge takes you over a smelly canal and after one or two blocks... More

This is part of the already-listed Qilou area. That said, it is worth a visit even if you have seen the old sections of SE Asian cities that have said to inspired the building styles. To find it, walk across the bridge from the north end of People's Park (renmin) and keep going north for about 5-10 minutes. The street... More

Zhongshan Road is not far form the clock tower and if you have the time, can spend sometime there and relax, for those who knows nuts about Chinese there is still some English to guild you there.

This street has an informative sign at one end explaining that this street (along with several others nearby) is an area used by the Portugese in the 1800s. Further down the street, there is a gallery that highlights the history of European influences here--establishing businesses and schools. The architecture is very interesting and unusual. The Quilou style incorporates columns to... More

I love Old Town. I loved Old Town when it was still 90% machinery shops and lighting fixtures. I love Old Town now that's it is being renovated. At least for now it's in limbo, getting ready to be awesome but not quite there yet. A lot of buildings are still being renovated. A lot of shops are empty. What's... More
