The largest and one of the last remaining statues of Chairman Mao in the entire country. Best viewed at night. Very moving. Odd that Mao is facing due West, would have thought he should be facing East. He faces Shenyang train station. The locals call the statue "Mao hailing a cab." Shenyang people are funny like that.

Zhongshan Square is a rather grand square - with an unfortunate lack of trees if you're visiting in the summer as I was! - with a huge sculpture commemorating the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. Which leaves one wondering why the square is named after Sun Zhong Shan/Sun Yat-sen (the founder of the Republic of China, who is... More

As Shenyang was the first major city to fall to the PRA in 1948/9 it is still proud of it's history - who better to cement its place than Mao. The statue is impesive, well maintained and the Square is very clean and tidy. Keep going east on Zhongshan Lu to come to a good Bar area.

There are not many oversized Mao Statues left in China so if you are in Shenyang make sure to head over to see the chairman and get a feel what communist propaganda felt like.

The statue here is a great piece of Socialist art and history, as it shows many of the key figures in China's socialist past. There's many interesting local activities as well, from roller skate dancing to traditional poetry being written with water in the stones.

This is basically a massive roundabout with a huge statue of Chairman Mao, supported by sculptures of significant events in Chinese history. Worth seeing but its just a statue, take a picture and move on!

You may search a little bit before you go there. There are several buildings built by Japanese when they invaded China. The way up to Shenyang railway station used to be the main street when Japanese controlled Shenyang. But it is also a modern places and very busy at summer night.

Towering statue of Mao overlooking the Heping Business district. One of the few tall statues of the henchman around in Northern China. Well worth a visit. Accessible via Transit Railway with Taiyuan North Station

The square has a large communist era Mao Zedong statue. This is the largest statue of Mao that I've seen in China. There are a few bars and restaurants around the edge of the square but nothing else too near.
