The petrified forest was great to visit. Nice hike with knowledgeable guide, she only spoke Spanish however the points still came across.
The wide trunked majestic trees with the bottom looking like elephant legs are great to see.
Our taxi driver added to the trip taking extra care.
Thanks

A rather pretty drive (2 hours) from Machala takes you to the petrified forest. When we were there in late October there was literally one bird and one squirrel to be seen during the entire 90 minutes we spent walking the trails. The petrified trees are nothing special although the biggest one is impressively large. If you're big on solitude and communing with Mother Nature or are really into not so exotic flora this might be a good place to spend some time; otherwise there are better things to do and see with the four hours you spent traveling to and from.

The Petrified Forest Puyango is a nature reserve, located along the river Puyango River, which divides the provinces of El Oro and Loja, 111 km from the city of Machala and 225 km from the city of Loja. There are fossilized tree trunks that have an approximate 100 million years and are the largest collection of petrified wood in the world, the largest specimen is 2 m in diameter and 15 m long. The Petrified Forest Puyango is a protected area with an area of 2659 hectares, which includes the tropical dry forest ecosystem. It is an open book to learn about the origins of life, is also an important natural area that contains a high biodiversity in a fragile ecosystem, particularly in western Ecuador. The Petrified Forest Puyango is a place to visit with family, where adults and children learn, expand their knowledge and marvel admiring nature.

It is located in the south of Ecuador, between the provinces of El Oro and Loja. The most appropriate season to visit is in summer because in winter it is difficult to climb mountains due to the rains.
In this place you can see fossilized tree trunks and leaves that belonged to the flora of the Mesozoic Era. The trees are about 100 million years old and this is perhaps the largest collection of Petrified Forest in the world, the largest is 2 m in diameter and 15m long. Also there are living trees of enormous size whose trunk has several rings that represent every 10 years. It is said that the space between the two is the amount of rain that fell during that time, allowing the tree to grow.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and light clothing, do not forget to bring water to rehydrate, because normally the heat is intense.

we had 2 guides, one local and a translator. I think some got lost in the translation. It was a pretty warm day so even though I enjoyed the hike and the sites, it was tough dealing with the heat.

It is a great natural resource and preserved area. It was a two hour drive from Machala but the cost of the tour was reasonable. $45 per person. I loved the scenic drive. The guide only spoke Spanish so I tried to pick up what I could.

The main attraction Petrified Forest Puyango are petrified trees. The most appropriate season to visit is the dry season from May to December .Very nice experience for nature lovers and hiking. You can see a lot of typical flora and fauna. Trees have an approximate age of 100 million years and this is perhaps the largest collection of petrified wood in the world; the largest is 2 m diameter and 15 m long. Two paths are the most important: the Araucarios, where petrified trees and the path of the Petrine are, where living trees are.
The path of the Araucarios is also known as giant trail, here is the giant petrified tree 60m. approximately length. The other path is that of the Petrine, living trees of enormous size whose trunk has several rings representing each 10 years. It is said that the space between the two is the amount of rain that fell during that time, allowing the tree to grow.
Our guide explained that the site was once covered by water, it looked like a sea, which is then dried becoming alive with animals and giant trees.

Wow!!! An astonishing experience! These petrified trees are 100 Mio years old – approx. As old as the Andes!!! Amazing and breathtaking!
Spanish speaking rangers are around and willed to give you a tour and a lot of information. There are 3 different east trails, if you do all if them it takes about 1.5 hours including guidance and various stops.
Puyango is far out of every touristy place but if you are interested in natural history it is worth to go there! We organized a driver from Machala (~2.5 h drive, price is up to negotiation and your final destination).

The best thing about the forest is the journey to get there as it offers amazing panoramas.
In the forest you will do a short circuit with a guide who will give you a few generic explanations about what you are seeing. What you will see are basically a few petrified tree trunks. (that sounds funny...)
Entrance fee is 1USD and the place is open every day from 9-5. However, this might change at any point.
Good luck finding any public transport to get there. I was extremely lucky that my Couchsurfing host took me there with his car.
