I have been here multiple times and will continue to return when time permits. Inspiring, religious where you are welcomed with graciousness. The men who work and live here as monks are holy, friendly and willing to help you when you ask them. Sunday mass...More

We've been out to Ghost Ranch many times and love hiking there. Today, we drove just ten minutes further and took a wonderful hike on the Rim Vista trail off of Forest Road 151... a good cardio workout of 2.5 miles up to a spectacular...More

I just returned from a visit to Monastery of Christ in the Desert and love the place. The Benedictine monks practice silence which seems to emphasize the abundance of birds in the canyon. The church is very simple, but perfect for the location with high...More

About 15 miles off the main highway. Do not travel on snowy or heavily rainy days. This is a real monastery, designed for prayer and contemplation. The small number of monks are gently welcoming, but you should remember they are not there for your entertainment....More

It is where a monastery should be--remote, with effort made to get there. The drive is 13 miles along a sometimes rough dirt road that in wet weather may be impassable. But the drive lets you leave the real world and take in the beauty...More

The 13 mi drive takes about 40 min- take your time and enjoy the surrounding mountain views and the Rio Chana. Very picturesque. When you arrive at the monastery, you are able to visit the sanctuary, dining area, gift shop, a few short trails. The...More

My husband and I decided to do a day trip to this monastery. The drive there was beautiful, especially the last 13 miles. Those last 13 miles are on a dirt road deep into the Santa Fe Forest. The road was in good conditions until...More

We didn't stop here although I'm told you can take tours and rent houses to stay. We saw it from the river on the end of our 3 day trip down the Rio Chama. What an incredible setting and the architecture is a perfect compliment...More

I cannot imagine a better time than Mid-October and late afternoon to make this journey of thirteen miles. Along the Ria Chama amidst desert and mountains winds Forests Service road 151. About an hour drive for most vehicles, it takes much longer for artists, photographers,...More

I don't believe there is a cafe in Santa Fe run by Benedictines but there is a shop on Don Gaspar, across from the Inn of the Governors, called The Monk's Corner connected to the Benedictines, I think.
Hi, would like to know if this place is expensive to stay at for a few days for an individual retreat?

$70 a night for a single room + meals. Lots more information online if you search for them

What if you meet someone coming in the opposite direction? Is there room for 2 cars to pass? Is the place typically crowded? Thank you!

I agree with the others, the road is a little treacherous, but not so that you cannot navigate through it. I think the most hazardous part is trying to take in all the beautiful scenery and still trying to drive. There are... More
