Tiny Museum

Many statues. The most interesting items for me was the tatoo equipment from the past. Worth a look. Short stop and good for a small group of adults.

Musem in Transition
Feb 2020
While a new museum is being built, a small exhibit of selected items is displayed in a temporary exhibition place. Around 100 items are displayed illustrating traditional Polynesian cultural concepts. The exhibit runs to September 20, 2020.

That there are artifacts at all is surprising considering most were carved from wood or natural items. There are statues and items of daily use. There is a set of items used for tattooing.

What we found most interesting is the display outlining the colonization history of the South Pacific island chains.

While we received a booklet in English, it is more about the transition and not the items on exhibit. All of the labels are in French with no English. My smattering of French allowed me to understand some of the exhibits.

Informative & Interesting
Feb 2020
Even though the museum website stated that they are undergoing some transitions and had a smaller exhibit, it was still worth the visit. There is a free audio tour you access through your phone . The audio tour was informative, but it would have been more helpful if the displays were numbered according to what the narrator was discussing. We spent a good hour at this smaller exhibit. The surrounding gardens would have been lovely to walk through, but it was a torrential downpour the day we visited.

Museum in transition
Feb 2020
We were looking forward to stepping into the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands on our recent trip to Tahiti. After paying the entrance fee, however, we discovered the Museum is in major transition, with an entirely new museum in the planning stages.
What was there for us to see was interesting and engaging, but consisted of 80 items (when the full museum holds about 12,000 items). We spent about 20 minutes in the one large room, and then decided to move on to other activities.
I expect the new museum will be quite compelling and engaging...but doesn't anticipate opening for a long time!

Fantastic Artefacts
Feb 2020 • Couples
This is a small museum not that far from Papeete. There are some amazing old Tahitian artefacts on display. Our tour guide gave us an excellent in-depth summary on most of the items on display in the museum.
There are toilets and a small shop at the museum along with vending machines for soft drinks and snacks.
Worth a visit.

Museum of Tahiti
Dec 2019
This is a small museum but we planned five nights in Tahiti so it fit into our time budget. Part of it is closed for renovation but the part that was open is educational. The gardens outside are also nice to wander.

Small and Underwhelming
Jan 2020
This museum is somewhat of a work in progress. It's currently has just a few exhibits, but boasts big plans for its future.

Most of the museum was closed
Sep 2019
What we were able to see in the museum was not a very large collection. Worth about 15 minutes. Most of the grounds were barricaded so one couldn't walk around. I wish we had known most was closed before we took a taxi out to it.

Interesting artifacts
Sep 2019 • Family
We stumbled across the museum by chance after I took a wrong turning. It was a shame that not all the museum was open as the main part is under reconstruction. The Tupuna Transit exhibition was interesting, but all in French. We managed to decipher a little bit of what it was saying, however it was still interesting to look at the artifacts. We wandered the grounds and found some festival about to start.

Under construction
Jun 2019 • Family
Most of the museum is under construction. For $6 USD per adult, we were able to see a limited selection of artifacts. All descriptions are in French only . Take a French translation app if you don’t speak French.
