Very beautiful and unique place on the earth. A must-see We brought the snow sled for the kids to sleding down the white sand hill. It's so fun! A must-do The only thing is that the park close between after-sunset and after-sunrise. I didn't check and assume. So I was surprised when I got up early to drive to the... More

We did one of the trails in the White Sands national monument and it was great although there were so steep dunes! It's beautiful and really well managed. If you have kids, bring a sled to go down the dunes it's really fun!

If you are interested in the backcountry camping opportunities, be sure to arrive at the visitors center at 9:00am sharp! There are only ten permits per day, and (at least when we were there) they went pretty quickly. For everyone else, the park is amazing. Try to get there later in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset over the dunes... More

I was stationed in Alamogordo back in the early 1990's and always had a great time visiting the sands on the weekends. This is a great family vacation spot and offers hiking, camping and amazing site seeing opportunities. We highly recommend the stop, you will not be disappointed!

One of the coolest places we have ever visited. It's like playing in snow but without the wetness and coldness. Super fun!

My biggest advice would be to get there when the Dunes Drive opens to avoid the crowds and drive directly to the Alkali Trail to enjoy the best view of the Monument. I arrived about 10 minutes after the drive opened and found myself the only person on the road even though I ran into other people at the various... More

Comprises no more than a vast area of dunes formed of gypsum rather than sand. Surprisingly cold to walk on, even under a blazing sun. Plastic sleds may be rented for children to scoot downhill on and have fun without freezing! Wonderful vistas for those happy to trek to the top of the larger dunes. Many cabanas, with table, benches,... More

I went alone and still had a good time. I shot a few photos of some interesting views. It was relaxing and mind settling. I still marvel at some of America's little secret beautiful spots. I recommend this place to families with children. Take a beach ball, and a pan sled to slide down the dunes. Get there late enough... More

This place exceeded all expectations! Beautiful white sands that stretch for miles and mountain vistas provide a visual that must be experienced. Wax up your plastic disc, $10 at gift shop, and slide down the dunes. Teenagers loved it but perfect for all ages.

We were staying nearby in Las Cruces for Thanksgiving and realized we were only about an hour away from White Sands and decided at the last minute to drive over. We were so glad we did and wish that we would have planned a longer trip. Tips..... 1. Go on and watch the 10 minute educational video in the Visitors... More
