About
Tresna means "love" in Balinese which is what we poured into the building of our dream cooking school. With our shared love of food and cooking, you will delve into hands-on lessons with a heavy emphasis on our rich Balinese culture. Our menus are Adi’s own recipes that he’s honed over decades of cooking for loved ones. We teach only authentic Balinese home cooked dishes as well as extravagant ceremonial specialties. We use the freshest of ingredients from our own gardens and the local market in Ubud. We selected the location, only 7 minutes from Central Ubud, for its natural riverside tranquility. We’ve tended trees for years, planted an organic garden and designed cooking stations that are conducive to learning. Beyond our beautiful location, we’re systemic in our approach. Our class menus are a celebration of the freshest ingredients of that that day. You'll learn recipes found only in a traditional Balinese family compound with passionate cooks such as Adi and Frances.

- SkagiMelbourne, Australia9 contributionsBest experience in BaliI have been to Bali many times, however this time I came solo. I met a woman at the hotel I was staying at, who recommended I go to Tresna Bali Cooking School and we both shared a passion for food and culture. I contacted them on the spot via their website and received a response within 20 minutes. As there were no other scheduled participants, I could book a private session. Arriving at the property, I was welcomed by the most beautiful people Frances and Adi. Their energy, stories and humour made the experience more than just a cooking class. Walking through the garden, you pick fresh produce and learn about ingredients we don’t have back home. The even had a cinnamon tree, which I had never seen before ( which is crazy as I LOVE cinnamon). We go through step by step preparing a celebration feast using traditional techniques (no blenders involved). The end result..... the best Balinese food I have EVER tasted. I cannot wait to return with my family. Thanks youVisited January 2020Travelled soloWritten 12 January 2020
- Polly C12 contributionsA place full of loveI have been to two different vegan cooking classes and various cultural experiences in Ubud, and my time at Tresna definitely stood out among them. Many fellow travellers had described the 5.5-hour class in great detail, which resonated with me a lot, and I will try not to repeat them here. I just wanted to share that I truly appreciate the magical connections to nature, food and Balinese culture that Francis and Adi managed to curate and establish for us there. I enjoyed greatly our time picking plants at their lovely garden before cooking. It’s amazing to be able to smell, touch and taste different plants including many aromatic ones right at the soil they are grown. We got to savour their true qualities as provided by the nature without the usual loss of aroma compounds in food we get in the city due to distance and time. And as we brought all the freshly picked ingredients into the kitchen, the cooking experience was so special because we had come to really know what went into our food as we chopped, minced, ground, seasoned, mixed and cooked all the wonderful ingredients. Throughout the class, Francis and Adi shared a great deal not just about Balinese food and cooking, but also Balinese culture as well as their very interesting personal journeys. To me, this experience was so much more than mechanical cooking, and far exceeded my expectations. This place has so much love, and kudos to Francis and Adi for creating such a lovely experience for us in Bali. PS While I LOVED every single dish that we made, my favourite dish was the Urab Salad comprising wild fern, moringa, amaranth, and grated coconut mixed with a spice paste made from almost 18 aromatic ingredients. It’s just so full of amazing flavours yet at the same time so humble, refreshing and balanced. I will be thinking about it all the time! :-pVisited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 March 2023
- Tom P1 contributionAmazing, immersive, comprehensive6 stars. I am a Chef and restaurant owner in Portland, OR. I brought a group of my Chefs and Managers to Bali to experience Tresna Bali Cooking School, and it exceeded expectations on every level. From the glorious organic gardens, to the deep cultural knowledge and culinary technique, Adi and Francis shared their wisdom with us. We cooked 10 dishes, from garden to prep to plating and finally enjoying our hard work. We came back w second day! As a professional Chef I work with cooks and farmers for a living, and these two are the real deal. Highly recommend! Also, they have fantastic rooms for rent, as well as operate an important non-profit Feed Bali, helping the Balinese community overcome the collapse during Covid. Literally do not have the words to praise this experience enough.Visited April 2023Travelled on businessWritten 5 April 2023

Adi, Frances, and their team created an incredible production and unforgettable culinary experience. Many reviews have already highlighted the amazing food, and it's true. It's incredible. I would like to focus more on the team and the incredible amount of work that this experience must take to create such a seamless, fun, and interactive class.
The moment I walked in, someone addressed me by my name - I was running late, so it was obvious who I was but nonetheless. It instantly created a warm and welcoming atmosphere that showed the staff's attention to detail and high level of service.
The cooking studio itself is beautiful. It's elegant, simple, and perfectly designed to entertain small groups. Adi and Frances are delightful—full of funny little quips, stories, and some pranks. I won't give them away, but it made for a really fun and engaging day.
We tasted our creations throughout the day. Plates never sat empty or dirty for more than 2 minutes. The staff was continually cleaning our stations and serving more tasters if desired. We worked on multiple dishes at a time, but it didn't seem or feel like it. Everything worked like clockwork. When we finished chopping things and moved over to the cooking area our stations were cleared and prepped for the next presentation. The amount of work, planning, and coordination that it took to pull off such a seamless 5-hour day is nothing short of amazing. There was no lag between activities, and everything seamlessly transitioned from one presentation to the next.
Adi and Frances were high-end wedding coordinators prior to starting the cooking school, and it shows. Their attention to detail was incredible to watch, understand, and experience. The whole day was choreographed perfectly...I use the term 'choreographed' because it accurately describes the level of coordination and precision involved....it was a production.
They are perfectionists. They not only taught us about Balinese culture through cooking but also continually taught people how to choose the best product, how to chop properly, about presentation, and technique. I love cooking and am particular about all of these things, so it was such a pleasure to participate in a class with such high standards that was also light and fun.
The Tresnea team is nothing short of incredible. They are true professionals and incredibly talented. It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with them. The experience was phenomenal, and the food was unforgettable. They put a lot of work and heart into creating the experience and you can feel it.

If it was possible to rate this six stars I would. Incredible experience in an incredible location. Not only do you learn to cook mouthwatering traditional Balinese dishes from scratch, but you will learn about Balinese culture and how it is unique from the rest of Indonesia.
Not only will you learn the recipes and process to make the dishes, but the class will teach you how coconut milk is made from scratch and how all the herbs and spices are harvested, which is truly unique to this class.
Frances and Adi were incredible hosts and their passion and dedication to what they do, made the experience unforgettable.
The fact that the class is in such small groups, (we were lucky enough to have a private class) makes the experience more personable and enjoyable.
I can't recommend this experience enough, if you are looking for a cooking class in Bali, COME HERE!

Had the pleasure to stay in the Little Wooden Cottage on the property, overlooking the river and as part of our stay participate in the traditional Balinese cooking with Adi, Francis and their lovely team - definitely a highlight of our time in Bali! We started by picking herbs, roots and spices straight from the organic garden, we made spice pastes and coconut milk and cream from scratch, using traditional tools and techniques, all in the comfort of a top-notch professional kitchen. All culminating in the most amazing lunch, absolutely delicious and one-of-a-kind, „highly recommended“ would be an understatement! 😊

My daughter and I loved the cooking course at Tresna. We enjoyed cooking in a clean environment and the food we made was absolutely delicious.
Yes, the cooking course is more expensive than other cooking courses in Ubud but we gladly support Frances and Adi and their „Feed Bali“ project. We already look forward to our next course.

Adi & Frances hosted such a fabulous day of guided foraging (in their dreamy gardens) & traditional Indonesian cooking (plant-based style!). Throughout we talked of plants, cooking, & stories of life, love, charity, & Balinese culture.
We also loved meeting Adi & Frances doggies (as you’ll see in our videos) - this was definitely a lovely part of the experience too! Adi & Frances were very in-tune with everyone’s needs & sensitive to the fact that not everyone loves dogs… so if that’s you, you can still get involved in this beautiful day but perhaps just opt-out of the doggo cuddles & squish!

We visited Frances and Adi’s cooking class during our honeymoon holiday in Ubud. I was told that In Bali, for wedding ceremony, normally men are preparing foods over night. Cooking is not just a process of making food but a chat time and social interaction time for Balinese men. Frences and Adi explained not just for good Balinese recipes but also all these cultural things. And we prepared our wedding ceremony foods together in group of 6 participants as we just got married 2 days ago at the time. My wife was very excited and enjoyed the class and foods. I 200% recommend this cooking class. And Two dogs were so adorable. :)

This was hands down one of the best culinary classes I've taken while traveling and I've done it frequently. Adi & Frances were gracious, kind, friendly, patient and informative hosts. We took two days of classes and it was our favorite part of the five days spent in Bali. Thank you so much friends!!!

What a great way to spend a morning/lunchtime.....
The class starts with a welcome drink, followed by an introduction to ingredients in the abundant gardens, learning about fruit, veg, herbs and spices, and picking some to include in our cooking.
I can't remember how many individual things we prepared - everything from curry pastes, peanut sauce, our own coconut milk, a chicken BBQd over coconut husks, pork satay, seafood curry, chicken dumplings steamed in banana leaf, sweet sticky tempeh, coconut pandan crepes to name but a few. I learned so much - Adi and Frances were both informative and entertaining, and the morning culminated in a delicious banquet lunch of all our efforts. Tresna even have some good imported wine available by the glass at a reasonable price to accompany the food. Utterly delicious - honestly the best food of our entire trip.
Highly, highly recommended - Yes, there will be cheaper cooking classes in Ubud but this one is rather special and well worth the cost - Adi and Frances only run 3 classes/week and for maximum 8 guests in each, each class requires a huge amount of preparation and the setting is simply gorgeous.

Our family of three had an amazing morning learning about the local Balinese culture, ingredients and cooking techniques. We had so much fun and it definitely brought out the “MasterChef” in all of us.
Frances and Adi excelled at showcasing their love for the Balinese cooking, culture and way of life. They have a bountiful organic garden from which we were able to harvest the spices and herbs used in the cooking class as part of the garden tour.
We were so impressed by the feast we have prepared and more so, enjoyed a delicious and generous lunch with great company of new found friends at the end of the class.
Highly Recommended!!

Frances, Adi and the team gave us a wonderful experience. It was superb to be able to pick many of the ingredients from their beautiful garden, and get some insight into Balinese culture also. The attention to detail was great, and the class ran really smoothly. It felt personal, no time was wasted, and we had a glorious feast at the end. I only wish I had had more room to eat more!! The follow up is also excellent, with Frances sharing photos and recipes used during the day. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Hello Marketa,
Please email me with your dates on the link on our website. We pick our own vegetables from our massive organic gardens. The market is for tourists only after 7 am as all produce is only sold from 4-7 am. We have custom built cooking school that is both indoors and fully air-conditioned as well as traditional outdoor cooking. We are the only cooking school of this quality here.
