The uphill hike was challenging, but manageable. The downhill hike was a bit difficult for me because of my lack of flexibility. The view of Taroko Gorge was amazing. It is a must-try if you are not afraid of height. We were in a private...More

The Zhuilu Old Trail is an awesome hike. Lots of spectacular view of the gorge. If you need help with the permit system, search for Keith Rebec's Zhuilu Old Trail guide on Google.

@Swallow Grotto, the start of the trek up to Zhuilu Old Trail. The entire trek took us about 5 hours (we trekked slowly, taking in the sights). My companion, who wasn't an outdoorsy/exercisy person, even declared that it was a trek she did not regret....More

I've read much of the trail is currently closed due to damage. Is the trail currently a loop or an "out and back" hike?

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Hualien at the end of March for a couple of nites. We would like to do the Zhuilu Old Trail. We're both in relatively good shape, but wondering if we need to have a tour guide? Does anyone know if it's beneficial or mandatory to have one? Thanks!
