Chiang Saen is an interesting half day tour from Chiang Rai. Lots of history but definetely need a tour guide for explanation. However, it would be better if Chiang Saen were combined with the Golden Triangle tour as it is on the same route.

A must see as you tour Chiang Saen and this area of Chiang Rai province. Nice area to walk, bicycle, motorbike, or get out of the car in key places. Easily seen quickly or you could linger as long as you want or get a bite in a nearby cafe. No charge and quite interesting historically to think how large... More

Chiang Saen is a relatively small place with not a lot of attractions beyond the Golden Triangle, but I fell in love with the place. The old city walls and temple ruins are amazing!

Unfortunately, we only saw the old city walls from our bus. There appears to be an inner and outer wall. It should be a wortwhile place to take a stroll

We were taken here and told the history of this area .The beautiful remains of a temple in a peaceful area was quite stunning .Memories of Ankor Wat on a mini scale .

The hilltop of Wat Phra That Pha Ngao offers great view of the Golden Triangle and Mekong River. Inside of the 10th-century temple has a beautiful artwork of Buddha images. Also Chiang Saen National Museum has a good collection of old stone carvings, Buddha images and historical artifacts.

It seems you can't drive more than a few km in the North without seeing a " we just have to stop and see spot" and so it on our list is Chiang Saen .Chiang Saen sits on the banks of the Mae Khong River . It is a 12th century walled city .You can easily make out the remains... More

I love old city walls and these look more genuine than some of the rebuilds in other cities. We hired a taxi from Chiang Rai for 2500 baht for the day and had a very enjoyable day in this town and the surrounds.

Evidence of the city walls runs around Chiang Saen. There walks that take you into and around the walls with quite nice parkland around the walls. For those interested in the history of the place then this is a must visit. We were staying at the Golden Triangle and drove in - parking was easy and we had some map... More
