A more lengthy time spent at the bridge although 40 degrees heat. Walked across and took some photos. Spotted a nice restaubent floating on the river but we decided to come back and try that another time. A good round off for our trip relating to WW2 in Kanchanaburi.

We were with a tour group and visited the bridge. Historical and interesting, but still a bridge. You can see where it was hit during the war. I'd allow 15 minutes to see. Nothing really around the area other than street vendors.

We stopped here on our way to Erawan Falls National Park. It made for a good stop on a long ride to learn a bit of the history of Thailand's involvement in WWII.

You really must pay a visit (even if it does take 3 hours to get here from Bangkok).

We chose to visit as part of a 'River Kwai & Local Village Tour'. There are various elements which should make up your visit:
1. WAR MUSEUM - 2 floors of human stories, experiences and artifacts which is really well done (plus a free cup of tea or coffee is included in the entrance fee - when you reach the second floor).
2. MILITARY CEMETERY - A well organized and well cared for green oasis containing the graves of the victims of Japanese imprisonment.
3. BRIDGE & RAILWAY - More details are shown below.

The bridge is a single track affair which you first have the choice to cross by foot (passing places ensure that it's safe to cross as you can dodge out of the way of the train) but it does get crowded.
When booking your seat choose the seats on the left hand side (pre-booking is recommended) single this allows you a view of the railway and the open countryside (the other side faces the rock face for the last part of the journey).
You are also provided with water and buns.
At the end of the journey there is a buffet lunch in a restaurant which overlooks the river and the curving railway track.

In some ways it's really ironic that the scene of such treatment has ended up as a tourist attraction...

This is an all day trip but well worth it.

We traveled with a small group booking from Bangkok with pick ups at several hotels. Pick up was 6.00 am, on time and a reasonably comfortable mini bus. The guide was well prepared and informative giving good background information and facts prior to reaching the destination stops.
The war cemetery is poignant and moving, the museum could be more emotive as it really doesn’t convey the atmosphere of a POW camp, the bridge itself is impressive in the context of the construction and the train journey is worth it, particularly in the final stage.
However, the whole experience was seriously dampened by the hours spent getting there and back. The tours are sold with a‘nominal’ 2-3 hours travelling……we doubled that on the return!! Bangkok is just solid traffic from miles out and progress was so slow that my wife and I, both mid 70’s, decided to get out and walk back to our hotel…..a 15 minute walk that saved us at least another hour in a mini bus !!!
Take the trip…….but be prepared for a long, frustrating and tedious journey!

This is part of the famous death railway the Japanese forced the POWs and certain Asians to build. The original bridge was destroyed by the Allies several times. This is a must see if you are in the area.

The bridge is so much more than just another tourist attraction. It’s important to remember the true history of what happened during the building of the Burma-Thailand Railroad, more accurately known as the Death Railway. Thousands of POWs perished in horrific conditions that are beyond imagination. I’m not a WWII history buff but coming here was high on my list of places to visit in Thailand. We booked a private tour with Quality Thai Guide that included Kanchanaburi, as well as the Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

We enjoyed this trip- the variety of activities and views of countryside. Our guide, Om was experienced, but didn’t welcome questions or facilitate group interaction in any way. He seemed to go through the motions, but was helpful when asked. The boat and train ride were really fun. Lunch was relaxing and good for local fare. A good way to spend a day. More enjoyable than Jim Thompson Museum.

A fantastic, well organised, coordinated trip that packed so much interest into 2 days. We travelled from Pattaya, so a very early start but well worth this minor inconvenience. A huge thank you to JAMES BC TOURS.
The trip included a breakfast, 2 lunches and a dinner, all of which were delicious. Would definitely go again if ever back in that area.

The museum was incredible, we spent 2 hours reading and appreciating the story of the horrendous conditions the prisoners were left in . The cafe was nice and food good . We were not sure how the actual bridge fitted in , basically a metal bridge next to a day market. Very little history attached!
