a beatiful walking experience
Nov 2021
Since our last visit, I have noticed that some buildings were renovated and some wooden walkways were built. There is a new bazaar now. It was a nice walking experience in autumn in such a good weather. I recommend you to spend a few our for walking.

Great views

Scenic spot on top of a hill, great views from here... it's a feasible walk up here from downtown Alanya, I think it took about an hour...it was kind of crowded, but that might have been because it was weekend, lots of Turkish families on an outing, that's on top of the daily stream of foreign tourists

Cable cars were great. Excellent views.
We were taken to the top of Castle by taxi, which was a waste of time and money. We bought tickets to enter the castle, which was disappointing..taking a round trip via cable cars and not entering the castle ruins would have been ideal..

Best thing to do in Alanya - city symbol
Aug 2021
The Alanya Castle dominates the entire area, standing high on a huge cape (better say peninsula) dividing the city into two parts.
It dates back to 13 c when it was built by the conquering Seljuks on the existing Roman and Byzantine fortification remnants. During the Ottomans the Castle declined in military importance and throughout the 19c many private villas and homes were built on the site which are still there.
The top fortification is a museum with remaining buildings of Romans, Byzantines and Turks. To visit it there's an entrance fee, but there's also a free part by the Mosque and cable car. The Castle offers magnificent views of the city beneath.
We went there by our rented car (big parking lot in front, symbolic fee), but you can also reach it via cable car. Count on around 2 hours for a proper visit.

Lift to the top station and back by foot
Aug 2021 • Couples
We decided to take a lift up to the hill and go back by foot. For the sake of photos, we went up around 18:15. The benefit was, that the sun was pretty low and not so strong. The light was really nice, the possible downside is that photos of the city contain also the sun - strong source of light :) after few minutes/hour or so, you can take night photos of the bay and Alanya.

Since we visited ruins in the evening, the weather was pretty nice - we were not sweaty and we could enjoy the trip.

For the return, we decided to go by foot. We did not prepare for the trip very well, so we did not explore possible ways to get back to the city. Since it was already night,, we took the most obvious one. It is possible that there is some hidden path under the lift.
The first part of the our way was a sidewalk in the forest, starting next to the top station. It was kind of slippery and not good for sandals :-) later the sidewalk ended and remaining two thirds of the way were on the road without sidewalk. Drivers were used to walkers- at least it seemed so. But overall, I am not sure if I would recommend to go by foot.

Beautiful old and historic view
May 2021 • Family
If you are in Alanya and dont have problems with your knees, take the teleferik all the way up and the dozen stairs all the way to the castle. If you have a bad knee take the car or a taxi straight to the castle. Definitely go around sunset. There are some cute shops and great restaurants around the area for a nice little walk and some souvenirs.
