Do you want to see İzmir bay and almost whole city ? If yes, this is the best place to do it. The castle is believed to be constructed by one of the commanders of Alexander after Alexander had a dream when he was taking a nap next to Pagos hill. The castle and town in it is also believed... More

Highlight of Izmir! Climbing up the stairs of this district which has the same name as the castle with it's charming favela atmosphere was one of our best travel experiences so far. It's many stairs and the colourful houses create a great spirit which passes on to you immediately, which my photos hopefully proof. Of course it is partly trashstrewn... More

I have been to many places izmir but i must say this is my favourite. Sure it's not well looked after and its situated in an outskirt of the city, but it still has more than enough to offer to enjoy it; the gate, the cisterns, views on roman aquaducts, a little market and an overall sight on the city, particularly... Its an interesting, fairly steep walk through the labyrinth of alley ways of beautiful colourful historical homes from Basmane at the base of the hill up to Kadifekale. The view from the castle area is fantastic and you can find women from regional areas selling their traditional work

You have a great view of Izmir from the castle. The castle looks really old, and there is not much to see, but it is amazing to think that Alexander the Great built it.

Great views of the city and bay but not worth the walk through a rather ropey area. Take a taxi for 15 liras from basmane gar.

The view is what it worths, it is astonishing, a perfect place to take photos. The castle is not special at all, only the walls remain. On the way to Kadifekale you can visit the blue fatih cami and from the back side of Kadifekale you can see the big Ataturk sculpture.

The view over Izmir from this dominant site high on a hill is still there, but it is now partially obscured by a shanty town. Moreover, the dusty square outside the old castle is now an improvised playground for Romany children and those of refugees. It is no longer a tourist destination and there are other sights in which to... More
