This is one of the Registan madrassas. I enjoyed the musical instruments show-demonstration given by the owner of a shop in the back building.

Whilst part of Registan Square, the Jewel in the Crown of Uzbekistan, Sher Dor Madrasah holds its place amongst the others. The façade is wonderful with brilliant coloured tiles in amazing patterns. But what sets it apart from all other Medrasah are the images of...More

What's unusual about this madrassah is the imagery of lions, human faces and the Zoroastrian sun symbols. This Shiite built building has imagery which is typically taboo (haram) for Muslims. In addition to these odd images, this is a sumptuous feast for the eyes.

Like the others in Registan, take your time and appreciate it. Make sure to see all the symbolism and sit down and enjoy the place.

The Registan's second built madrasah was the least impressive overall but still visit-worthy. Most guides will immediately point out the two felines on the outside which are interesting enough, however a visit to the courtyard revealed quite a bit of construction going on which limited...More

This madrassa, known for the tigers on its door, has had much less internal restoration work done than the other two that surround it. Consequently, the visitor gets a better understanding of the state of the building for much of its history. There is a...More

Like the Tilya Kori Madrassah, this madrassah occupies one side of the impressive Registan Square, and as such, is hard to miss. Check them all out!

A magnificent Madrasa built between 1619 and 1636 by Yalangtush Bahadur. On the front of the madrasah are Tigers chasing Deer. the twin suns have human faces. This seems to be against all things Islam. the influence of Zoroasterism can all so be seen. Very...More
