Drove 1.5 hours only to be turned away because this MAJOR tourist attraction only accepts cash. There's no ATM anywhere nearby either. Really spoiled my experience.

Take this ropeway for some beautiful views of the Northern Alps. From the upper station, you can hike to a mountain hut (1 to 1.5 hours), with great views of Kamikochi. From here you can hike to Kamikochi in about 3 hours.

One of the best place to see Japanese Alps. Really nice observation spot. Also just to enter the rope cabin and be elevated on the top of the mountain is beautiful experience.

Went there and the hot spring is broken. The food there isn't good and expansive. But the view is amazing. The trip cost 2,900yen per adult.

Just don't buy your coffee at the cafes up there!!! However if you are hungry, the croissants are worth sampling. The views are really worth the trip up. Air is fresh and lots of space so you don't feel the crowd. I noticed a lot...More

Beautiful views - went to the top and hiked for an hour up and 30 minutes down. The hike is rocky with moderate difficulty so be prepared. A must see if your in the area.

Good fun going up and down some very steep mountainsides and when we visited recently, arriving to snow covering the mountain top.

This was a nice view at the top, but there really wasn't much to do other than going up and then coming down.

The whole day trip from Takayama to Shin-Hotaka and back took about 6 hours and costed 6000 yen per person and it was not worth it. There is nothing extraordinary if you have ever tried a ropeway and seen some mountains before. Stay at Takayama...More

Yeah. Half day trip should be okay. But make sure, you have enough time to reach Takayama.
